But it was too late to redo it.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The\u00c2\u00a0nutcracker design\u00c2\u00a0from <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abitofstitch.com\">A Bit of Stitch<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<\/em> is surrounded by a candy cane frame from <em>Adorable Ideas<\/em>, narrowed in my heavily used <em>BuzzEdit2<\/em> program.<\/p>\n<p>Black lace tape, run vertically on either side of the embroidery, is embellished with a decorative stitch from my Brother Duetta 6500D.\u00c2\u00a0 The same stitch is worked on the back , around the collar and on the mock sleeve cuffs.<!--more-->\u00c2\u00a0My personal name for this stitch is barbed wire, and like its namesake, it jabbed me with aggravation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Nutcracker-shirt-back.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32415 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Nutcracker-shirt-back.jpg\" alt=\"Nutcracker shirt back\" width=\"640\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Nutcracker-shirt-back.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Nutcracker-shirt-back-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The last area to embellish with barbed wire was the collar.\u00c2\u00a0 YIKES!\u00c2\u00a0 This stitch pattern is a nightmare to try to pivot!\u00c2\u00a0 What was I thinking?<\/p>\n<p>Initially, I planned to use a feather stitch, but it seemed time to try something different.\u00c2\u00a0 Even a feather stitch would have been extremely difficult to pivot on the collar points, but the barbed wire stitch was enough to make me consider hand stitching.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Nutcracker-shirt-center-front.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32416 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Nutcracker-shirt-center-front.jpg\" alt=\"Nutcracker shirt center front\" width=\"640\" height=\"586\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Nutcracker-shirt-center-front.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Nutcracker-shirt-center-front-300x274.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If I had not already done all the other pieces, I might have tried that on the collar, if no machine stitch suited me. But, alas, I <em>had<\/em> done all the other stitching so I just had to make it work.\u00c2\u00a0 It required a few stitches done by hand, and even then it is not perfect.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s very humbling to know that even with my best effort, I could not get it right.<\/p>\n<p>The collar is piped in black and the buttons are black mother-of-pearl.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not completely satisfied with this shirt.\u00c2\u00a0 Aside from the pivoting imperfections and the crooked embroidery, the lace tape, I think, was a mistake.\u00c2\u00a0 Even though I used Stitch&amp;Ditch under the barbed wire stitching, it pulled the soft, loose threads of the lace tape.\u00c2\u00a0 The distortions in the weave are not glaringly obvious, but a solid black bias would have been more pleasing.\u00c2\u00a0 I will use that on Alastair&#8217;s shirt.<\/p>\n<p>Still lined up in\u00c2\u00a0 the queue of grandchildren sewing projects are Alastair&#8217;s outfit, Robert&#8217;s shorts, Laurel&#8217;s slip and a matching dress for her American Girls doll.
