Today was the official opening of our Little Santa Workshop.\u00c2\u00a0 Newly empowered by success in the workshop and at the sewing machine and puffed up with confidence, \u00c2\u00a0Robert and Laurel have composed a very long list of friends and family members\u00c2\u00a0for whom they intend to make gifts.\u00c2\u00a0 Trying not to put a damper on their enthusiasm and generosity, I suggested that we prioritize the recipient list and begin right away.\u00c2\u00a0 So we did.<\/p>\n
There are so many quick and easy sewing projects that I think Laurel just might be able to\u00c2\u00a0check off most of the names on her list.\u00c2\u00a0 Coming up with comparably simple\u00c2\u00a0projects for the 5 year old “shopper,” Robert’s\u00c2\u00a0title\u00c2\u00a0for\u00c2\u00a0 his woodworking persona,\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0presents a greater challenge.<\/p>\n
Today, Laurel made a Christmas pillowcase for one of her cousins.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0The turn-tube decorative hem technique<\/a> is detailed in an earlier post\u00c2\u00a0 Even\u00c2\u00a0with her little Brother set at a very low speed, Laurel finished this pillowcase in less than an hour.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n turn tube hem in progress<\/p><\/div>\n I was at her side most of the time, mostly pinning.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0The only other assistance I\u00c2\u00a0 gave was to serge the seams.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n I’ve prepared a stack of neutral fabrics for the body of the pillowcase and a variety of novelty prints, rick rack and trims\u00c2\u00a0for the hem.\u00c2\u00a0 Having these cut to size, pressed and at the ready will speed things up considerably.<\/p>\n When we got to the final step in the contrasting hem, I described it as\u00c2\u00a0wrapping a\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0bun around a hot dog.\u00c2\u00a0 Laurel asked me to repeat that.\u00c2\u00a0 When I showed her just what I meant, she had an aha<\/em> moment.\u00c2\u00a0 She then commented that all this talk about hot dogs made her hungry.\u00c2\u00a0 Could she have one?<\/p>\n If a 6 year-old can make one of these up in 55 minutes, just think how quickly you could do it.\u00c2\u00a0 Give it a try.\u00c2\u00a0 Santa needs all the help he can get.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Today was the official opening of our Little Santa Workshop.\u00c2\u00a0 Newly empowered by success in the workshop and at the sewing machine and puffed up with confidence, \u00c2\u00a0Robert and Laurel have composed a very long list of friends and … Continue reading <\/a>
