color: black; font-size: small;\">\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: small;\">And this turned out to be a good idea&#8230;After getting the dresses, one of the girls loudly proclaimed in one of the &#8220;big box&#8221; color: black; font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: small;\"><\/p>\n<p>Children&#8217;s Corner <em>Margaret<\/em> was used as the base pattern.\u00c2\u00a0 I pleated 24 rows on the fronts of the dresses so the smocking would end at the midriff.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: small;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: small;\"><\/p>\n<p>I waited to cut out the back bodice until the smocking was finished\u00c2\u00a0and adjusted\u00c2\u00a0the waistline seam in the back\u00c2\u00a0so it would\u00c2\u00a0fall at the last row of smocking on the front. The original plate and the dress in the magazine used flowerettes for embellishments.\u00c2\u00a0 I used a cluster of 4 tiny pearls instead.\u00c2\u00a0 I like a more 3 dimensional look for embellishment.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: small;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: small;\">The idea of the &#8220;puffing&#8221; between the rows of smocking was especially appealing as it added even more depth and softness.\u00c2\u00a0 I used 4 strands of DMC floss for smocking on the velveteen.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_32662\" style=\"width: 386px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/split_sleeve1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32662\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32662\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/split_sleeve1.jpg\" alt=\"split sleeve\" width=\"376\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/split_sleeve1.jpg 376w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/split_sleeve1-176x300.jpg 176w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 376px) 100vw, 376px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32662\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">split sleeve<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: small;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: small;\"\n\n\n>The split sleeve on the dresses required the use of a &#8220;bell sleeve&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 I used the instructions in Elizabeth Travis Johnson&#8217;s book <em>The Complete Book of Sewing for Children<\/em> to draft a bell sleeve with gathers at the top.\u00c2\u00a0 This allows the sleeve to hang straight, but still have a soft look with gathers.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: small;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, sans-serif; color: black; font-size: small;\"><\/p>\n<p>The edge of the sleeve was finished with tiny velveteen piping as was the neckline.
