I&#8217;ve had to think about it because Faux Heirloom Sundress is another class I will be teaching in Myrtle Beach at the end of the month.<\/p>\n<p>The beauty of this summer frock is its easy care properties.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s no surprise to heirloom loving grandmothers everywhere that ironing\u00c2\u00a0organdy and Swiss batiste\u00c2\u00a0beauties is a real\u00c2\u00a0problem for busy young mothers.\u00c2\u00a0 This wash and wear, easy care, easy sew pop-over meets many of the requirements for an heirloom garment.\u00c2\u00a0 And still, it comes out of the dryer ready to wear and is as sturdy as Old Navy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/1-fauxyoke2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34662\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/1-fauxyoke2.jpg\" alt=\"1-fauxyoke2\" width=\"640\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/1-fauxyoke2.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/1-fauxyoke2-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The fancyband\u00c2\u00a0on the skirt and front yoke are applied, rather than inserted.\u00c2\u00a0 Nothing is cut away behind thee bands.\u00c2\u00a0 The base fabric is intact under these embellishments, maintaining the structural integrity of the solid fabric.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;faux handloom&#8221; embroidered insertion sets the heirloom mood.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 is polyester based, but very good quality, as is the fabric, rice colored Imperial broadcloth and gingham check.\u00c2\u00a0 The\u00c2\u00a0inclusion of\u00c2\u00a0 just a little genuine heirloom trim, the Swiss beading, lends credibility\u00c2\u00a0to\u00c2\u00a0the heirloom status of the garment.<\/p>\n<p>Gingham is so popular right now.\u00c2\u00a0 Using gingham rather than ribbon in the beading and as borders for the embroidered insertion adds playfulness to the otherwise demure look of ivory and pastels.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Because the entredeux holes would reveal the base fabric, they have been threaded with green\u00c2\u00a0twisted cord thread which matches the green vine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/1-fauxfancyband2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34663\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/1-fauxfancyband2.jpg\" alt=\"1-fauxfancyband2\" width=\"640\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/1-fauxfancyband2.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/1-fauxfancyband2-300x110.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As I was designing this project, I kept wrestling with the bias binding.\u00c2\u00a0 Traditional heirloom standards requires\u00c2\u00a0that \u00c2\u00a0it\u00c2\u00a0be machine stitched to the right side of the garment and hand whipped to the inside.\u00c2\u00a0 More casual styles use topstitching which violates one of the strictest rules of heirloom sewing, that no machine stitching show except for tucks.\u00c2\u00a0 But the solution lay in\u00c2\u00a0two staple of heirloom sewing, 80 wt. thread and #60 needle.<\/p>\n<p>By carefully stacking the folded edges of the bias ties and stitching a tiny zig zag W. 1.0 and L 1.0 over the fold and then into the air, the finish is nearly invisible without magnification.\u00c2\u00a0 This same technique was used to join the gingham in the fancyband to the skirt.<\/p>\n<p>As I usually do, I am making kits with a variety of embroidered insertions, Swiss trims, gingham and Imperial colors.\u00c2\u00a0 If I had more time, I would love to make up several of these for Laurel in readiness for summer.\u00c2\u00a0 Also, I just want to see the combinations made up.\u00c2\u00a0 But as the Sewing at the Beach class progresses, I will have that satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>I am rather excited about faux heirloom.\u00c2\u00a0 What do you think of it?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; This is the quintessential modern project for old fashioned Nanas.\u00c2\u00a0 I love this easy care\/faux heirloom dress.
