Surely it must have been allowed to peek out from under a skirt. This is an exquisite trim, further embellished with 6 tiny tucks above the edge.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Actually, I love everything about them.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0So this lacy sort of crazy patch quilting is a natural outlet for my appreciation and use of the materials.<\/p>\n<p>An earlier post addressed the quilt shown at the left,\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <em>In the Pink<\/em>, so I won&#8217;t go into details about it.\u00c2\u00a0 But since one of the classes I will be teaching at <em>Sewing at the Beach<\/em>, in Myrtle Beach, SC, is titled <em>Lace Crazy Patch<\/em>, I wanted to share with you photos of some of the lovely textiles that will be included in the student kits.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s laces are beautiful, no doubt.\u00c2\u00a0 But I think back to comments made some time ago by Joyce Oakley, who at that time\u00c2\u00a0had been\u00c2\u00a0vice president of Capitol Imports for several years.\u00c2\u00a0 She\u00c2\u00a0explained that the number of background patterns in a lace contribute mightily to the cost.\u00c2\u00a0 In today&#8217;s market, the lace becomes so expensive that it is almost impossible to generate enough sales to offset the cost of making the elaborate laces of yesteryear.\u00c2\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>For as many years as I have been sewing, I have collected heirloom laces and textiles.\u00c2\u00a0 Many are pieces\/parts of antique garments, \u00c2\u00a0like the \u00c2\u00a06&#8243; Swiss edge\u00c2\u00a0from a vintage\u00c2\u00a0petticoat.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-12858\" title=\"zlaceCrazypinkrings\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/zlaceCrazypinkrings-1024x446.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"444\" height=\"191\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Others, such as the pink satin rings, are yardage that was for sale to the home sewist.\u00c2\u00a0 This piece is so unusual.\u00c2\u00a0 In today&#8217;s market, I have never seen an edge that combined all these features:\u00c2\u00a0 colored embroidery covered with organdy, eyelets, fil tire&#8217; and entredeux.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10869\" style=\"width: 456px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/LaceCrazycoronatrioncord.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10869\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10869\" title=\"LaceCrazycoronatrioncord\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/LaceCrazycoronatrioncord-1024x784.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" height=\"276\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10869\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coronation cord on a damaged doily.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Coronation cord was very popular in the first quarter of the previous century.\u00c2\u00a0 Readily available in a variety of colors and sizes, the cord was simply couched in place for household items as well as clothing.\u00c2\u00a0 Antique magazines offer ads for its purchase and projects for its use.\u00c2\u00a0 I wish we could purchase this product now.\u00c2\u00a0 I have lots of ideas.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12859\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/zLaceCrazyIrish1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12859\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12859\" title=\"zLaceCrazyIrish1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/zLaceCrazyIrish1-1024x319.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"464\" height=\"140\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12859\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Irish crochet blouse cuff<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fine crochet laces were created at home by the proverbial everyday housewives.\u00c2\u00a0 One of the finest and most popular\u00c2\u00a0was Irish crochet.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Fine lawn blouses sported cuffs and collars while household linens also were heavily embellished with Irish crochet.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Because it is a dense, tight lace, it has\u00c2\u00a0outlived most of the\u00c2\u00a0items which featured it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12860\" style=\"width: 471px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/lacecrazytatting1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12860\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12860\" title=\"lacecrazytatting\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/lacecrazytatting1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"461\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12860\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tatted galoon built around a cord of squares and bars.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Tatting has never been as popular as it was in the early 1900\u00e2\u20ac\u00b2s.\u00c2\u00a0 As with most forms of needlework, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s popularity popularity spawned creative interpretations.\u00c2\u00a0 This center of this piece, the small squares separated bybars,\u00c2\u00a0is, I think, a staple of Battenburg lace.\u00c2\u00a0 It just doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t look like a Battenburg component to me, but\u00c2\u00a0this characterization of its origins was reported to me by a relatively credible source.\u00c2\u00a0 So perhaps it is, or isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/LaceCrazyemblace2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10898\" title=\"MoreLaceCrazyemblace2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/LaceCrazyemblace2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"481\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the loveliest pieces included in some of the kits is a piece of very, very fine Swiss embroidery on very sheer batiste, circa 1920&#8217;s.\u00c2\u00a0 As if the embroidery were not enough, it is then\u00c2\u00a0trimmed with 1 1\/4&#8243;\u00c2\u00a0edging. Even the tiny\u00c2\u00a0granito styled\u00c2\u00a0dots are delicate.\u00c2\u00a0This is so representative of the delicate, airy styles of the day.
