{"id":1101,"date":"2009-09-04T00:34:39","date_gmt":"2009-09-04T04:34:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/?p=1101"},"modified":"2014-12-29T01:46:25","modified_gmt":"2014-12-29T06:46:25","slug":"pink-diamonds-baby-pillow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2009\/09\/04\/pink-diamonds-baby-pillow\/","title":{"rendered":"Machine Shadow Embroidery~ Baby Pillow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/shadmadpilo1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31072\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/shadmadpilo1.jpg\" alt=\"shadmadpilo\" width=\"800\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/shadmadpilo1.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/shadmadpilo1-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This sweet little baby pillow was a joy to stitch and makes such a pretty and practical baby gift.\u00c2\u00a0 With its shadow embroidery,\u00c2\u00a0 featherstitching and Madeira applique hem,\u00c2\u00a0 it looks delicate and delightful.<\/p>\n<p>Made of good quality domestic cotton batiste, it needs no lace or trim to complete its tender look.<\/p>\n<p>In my humble opinion, shadow embroidery is one of the prettiest embellishments that can be added to a project.\u00c2\u00a0 For babies, children, ladies or linens, its delicacy is stunning.\u00c2\u00a0 Much as I have always enjoyed doing it by hand, I was absolutely enthralled when my friend Suzanne Hinshaw developed her techniques for achieving the identical look with machine embroidery.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31070\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/machineshadmadhem.jpg\" alt=\"machineshadmadhem\" width=\"800\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/machineshadmadhem.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/machineshadmadhem-300x151.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The technique is so simple that it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hard to go wrong.\u00c2\u00a0 You simply hoop up a very sturdy water soluble stabilizer with no fabric and then stitch the portion of the design that, when done by hand, would have been on the back of the fabric.\u00c2\u00a0 Think of it as the fill pattern.<\/p>\n<p>Then, after placing strips of double sided tape around the embroidered design, you press sheer to semi-sheer fabric to the stabilizer such as batiste or even light weight linen.\u00c2\u00a0 Of course, you would have marked where you want the design to be so you can position the design perfectly.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 And Suzanne&#8217;s instructions make it clear just when the fabric is placed on the stabilizer.\u00c2\u00a0 In fact, all of her directions are very clear.<\/p>\n<p>The next step is to stitch on the fabric.\u00c2\u00a0 The design is sized such that the underlay portion of the design which is stitched only on the stabilizer is just ever so slightly larger than the outlining stitches that are worked on the fabric itself.\u00c2\u00a0 The top stitches catch the underlay stitches which create the shadow effect.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, you remove the piece from the hoop and gently peel the stabilizer away from the linen where the double sided tape has held it in place.\u00c2\u00a0 Cut away as much of the remaining water soluble stabilizer away as possible.\u00c2\u00a0 Then immerse the piece in water and let the stabilizer dissolve away.\u00c2\u00a0 When all signs of stabilizer are gone, let it dry and then press.<\/p>\n<p>When it is finished, you will have shadow embroidery so credible that no one would even think to examine the back side.\u00c2\u00a0 And if they did, they would be hard pressed to recognize the slight difference in the look.<\/p>\n<p>In subsequent posts, I will have more shadow embroidery, some by hand and more by machine using Suzanne\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s gorgeous designs.\u00c2\u00a0 I might even persuade her to make her designs available again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; This sweet little baby pillow was a joy to stitch and makes such a pretty and practical baby gift.\u00c2\u00a0 With its shadow embroidery,\u00c2\u00a0 featherstitching and Madeira applique hem,\u00c2\u00a0 it looks delicate and delightful.
