Tuesday was the lace crazy patch class and each square was beautiful, unique and interesting.\u00c2\u00a0 Before class, I was worried that the students might not appreciate the elderly laces, but the worry was unfounded.\u00c2\u00a0Without exception, the ladies looked past the few age spots on the laces and saw instead the needlework and laces used by our ancestors.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n
Each student got a two-part kit,\u00c2\u00a0the first\u00c2\u00a0with\u00c2\u00a0neutral laces, embroideries and trims along with cotton batting, pima\u00c2\u00a0cotton backing and a batiste top to which to\u00c2\u00a0laces were attached.\u00c2\u00a0 The second\u00c2\u00a0kit included more laces, but\u00c2\u00a0some kits had a\u00c2\u00a0color theme and others\u00c2\u00a0consisted of more monotone pieces.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n
<\/a>This is what Nancy did with the brown kit. The collar is not in perfect condition, but she chose to leave it intact. Note the lace in the center of the collar neckline. Sharon brought almost 8 yards of this exquisit antique 8" lace insertion to share with the class<\/p><\/div>\n
The colored kits came in blue, pink, yellow, green and\u00c2\u00a0brown. Here are a few of the almost finished block.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n
One of the most heartwarming aspects of this class was the students’\u00c2\u00a0willingness to share their\u00c2\u00a0own treasures with the class. Sharon’s lace which is centered in Nancy’s brown collar piece was one of the loveliest\u00c2\u00a0pieces I’ve ever seen.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Sharon just left it on the table for\u00c2\u00a0everyone to cut what they wanted.<\/p>\n
Gracie brought several bolts of cluny which added a\u00c2\u00a0nice contrasting texture to the fine\u00c2\u00a0lace.\u00c2\u00a0 Again, it was put out for all to\u00c2\u00a0share.\u00c2\u00a0 What generous spirits these ladies have! This is a very hectic time for the teachers, who\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0often begin their day in class at 7:30 a.m. and leave that class at 5:30 or 6 p.m., long after the students have left.\u00c2\u00a0 There is little time for the relaxed dining offerred at Cafe Amalfi overlooking the ocean.\u00c2\u00a0 Gracie, one of the best cooks and most gracious, loving ladies I know, invited\u00c2\u00a0my darling teacher roommate Terri\u00c2\u00a0 and me to join her for dinner.\u00c2\u00a0 Along with some other students we enjoyed a divine pasta dinner with wo sauces, fresh salad and Gracie’s famous cheesecake for dessert at the condo she had rented in the adjoining building.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0It was an oasis in a long, exhausting but wonderful\u00c2\u00a0day.
