{"id":11259,"date":"2011-02-10T22:50:27","date_gmt":"2011-02-11T03:50:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/?p=11259"},"modified":"2015-01-20T14:07:14","modified_gmt":"2015-01-20T19:07:14","slug":"encore-collar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2011\/02\/10\/encore-collar\/","title":{"rendered":"Encore Collar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Encore:\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0a reappearance or additional performance demanded by an audience (definition from Merriam-Webster dictionary)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/EncoreShadoworkCollardress1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31232\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/EncoreShadoworkCollardress1.jpg\" alt=\"EncoreShadoworkCollardress\" width=\"800\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/EncoreShadoworkCollardress1.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/EncoreShadoworkCollardress1-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was no real demand and I&#8217;m certainly not a real audience, but this\u00c2\u00a0collar has definitely made a welcome reappearance.<\/p>\n<p>Worn first by my\u00c2\u00a0daughter 27 years ago when she was 5, it turned up at the bottom of a box of old samples I\u00c2\u00a0unpacked to take to Sewing at the Beach.\u00c2\u00a0 Now, it will be\u00c2\u00a0worn by my granddaughter Laurel, who is 6.<\/p>\n<p>Laurel&#8217;s \u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Christmas Dress \u00e2\u20ac\u212210\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2010\/11\/15\/christmas-dress-10\/\">black velveteen Christmas dress<\/a> (2010)\u00c2\u00a0 featured\u00c2\u00a0an heirloom sewn\u00c2\u00a0pinafore bib,\u00c2\u00a0 machine embroidered with the seasonal Sugar Plum Fairy.\u00c2\u00a0 The encore shadow\u00c2\u00a0work collar\u00c2\u00a0refreshes the garment for a\u00c2\u00a0Valentine&#8217;s Day party.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/zshadoworkcollarRL.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31233\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/zshadoworkcollarRL.jpg\" alt=\"zshadoworkcollarRL\" width=\"800\" height=\"569\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/zshadoworkcollarRL.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/zshadoworkcollarRL-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Swiss batiste and tatting work well\u00c2\u00a0with\u00c2\u00a0the hand stitched\u00c2\u00a0surface embroidery and red shadow work bows.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<!--more-->\u00c2\u00a0I&#8217;ve always\u00c2\u00a0appreciated the textural contrast of tatting on velveteen.\u00c2\u00a0 At its first &#8220;performance&#8221; when Rebecca wore the collar,\u00c2\u00a0it was\u00c2\u00a0also worn\u00c2\u00a0over a black velveteen dress.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/EncoreShadowportrait1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31234\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/EncoreShadowportrait1.jpg\" alt=\"EncoreShadowportrait\" width=\"660\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/EncoreShadowportrait1.jpg 660w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/EncoreShadowportrait1-247x300.jpg 247w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My\u00c2\u00a0initial exposure to shadow work embroidery was at the first SAGA (Smocking Arts Guild of America) regional seminar in the early &#8217;80&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/EncoreShadowRportraitsepia1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31235\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/EncoreShadowRportraitsepia1.jpg\" alt=\"EncoreShadowRportraitsepia\" width=\"534\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/EncoreShadowRportraitsepia1.jpg 534w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/EncoreShadowRportraitsepia1-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 534px) 100vw, 534px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It was held in Spartanburg, SC, at Converse College.\u00c2\u00a0 My mother, my sister-in-law, my dear friend Mary Hale Hoffmann, and I drove up from Florida to attend.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret Pierce taught the shadow work class.\u00c2\u00a0 I thought she and shadow embroidery both were pure magic.\u00c2\u00a0 It continues to enchant me.<\/p>\n<p>There,\u00c2\u00a0we met newcomer Martha Pullen whose first book, \u00c2\u00a0<em>French Sewing by Machine,<\/em> had just been released.\u00c2\u00a0 Becky Summers was to have taught\u00c2\u00a0the heirloom sewing class but was unable to make it, so Martha stepped in.\u00c2\u00a0 Few people knew who she was at the time, but her name, as you know, was soon\u00c2\u00a0to dominate the heirloom sewing world.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<em>NOTE:\u00c2\u00a0 Later, Mary Hale Hoffmann went on to write the first contemporary book on shadow embroidery, published by Martha.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Mildred Turner assisted Martha at that event.\u00c2\u00a0 She charmed everyone who met her and her expertise was immediately apparent.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Who could have predicted that these two ladies would have such impact on the sewing industry and on the lives of so many\u00c2\u00a0eager students?<\/p>\n<p>A few years later, Martha held her own schools in Huntsville\u00c2\u00a0where both Mildred and I taught.\u00c2\u00a0 And a few years after that, Mildred was hosting her own schools in Maggie Valley, NC, where I taught along\u00c2\u00a0with Carol Ahles, Kathy Stachowicz, April Dunn, Londa Rohlfing, Jeannie Baumeister and others.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00c2\u00a0 made so many good friends and so many fond memories.\u00c2\u00a0And I learned so, so much.<\/p>\n<p>After doing a fair amount of shadow embroidery through the years for my Rebecca,\u00c2\u00a0 I was equally intrigued by Suzanne Hinshaw&#8217;s \u00c2\u00a0spectacular machine shadow embroidery designs.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0The ease and speed of\u00c2\u00a0 working this delicate technique by machine is addictive.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0doing shadow embroidery by hand allows you to stitch whatever you like,\u00c2\u00a0IF you have the time.<\/p>\n<p>I certainly wish I had more time to to pursue this soothing and gentle needleart.\u00c2\u00a0 I might\u00c2\u00a0stitch yet another shadow work collar for Laurel&#8217;s black velveteen dress.\u00c2\u00a0 Or something else&#8230;&#8230;..What is your favorite form of handwork?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Encore:\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0a reappearance or additional performance demanded by an audience (definition from Merriam-Webster dictionary) &nbsp;
