{"id":11348,"date":"2011-02-16T23:53:42","date_gmt":"2011-02-17T04:53:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/?p=11348"},"modified":"2018-11-10T22:39:52","modified_gmt":"2018-11-11T03:39:52","slug":"knight-alastair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2011\/02\/16\/knight-alastair\/","title":{"rendered":"Knight Alastair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/KnightA.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11353\" title=\"KnightA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/KnightA-688x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"504\" height=\"825\" \/><\/a>Names are funny.\u00c2\u00a0 From generation to generation,\u00c2\u00a0they wax and wane in popularity.\u00c2\u00a0 When we named our son Ryan, I knew of only one other child by that name;\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0my sorority sister&#8217;s son\u00c2\u00a0was 6 years old on the other side of the country.\u00c2\u00a0 Now,\u00c2\u00a0&#8220;Ryan&#8221; \u00c2\u00a0is as common as John used to be.\u00c2\u00a0 Alastair, however, seems never to have achieved a high ranking in the past 100 years.<\/p>\n<p>Which is why my daughter and\u00c2\u00a0her husband, Harvey,\u00c2\u00a0chose it.\u00c2\u00a0 Every name that they considered was first checked against a list of the 100 most popular names in the past 100 years.\u00c2\u00a0 &#8220;Alastair&#8221; was clearly absent from each.\u00c2\u00a0 So that&#8217;s the name they chose.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after my grandson&#8217;s birth,\u00c2\u00a0a friend of Harvey&#8217;s commented, &#8220;With a name like Alastair, it&#8217;s knighthood or failure.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0Thus, the choice of this embroidery design for his Valentine&#8217;s Day shirt.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/KnightAyardCROP.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11355\" title=\"KnightAyardCROP\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/KnightAyardCROP.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"530\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After choosing the knight from Planet Applique <a href=\"http:\/\/www.planetapplique.com\">www.planetapplique.com<\/a> , I decided on the text, &#8220;Soon I&#8217;ll be your knight in shining armor.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 But a senior moment denied me access to the proper spelling and I typed in &#8220;amor.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>My Latin\u00c2\u00a0education kicked in\u00c2\u00a0immediately and I knew this was a much better punch line.\u00c2\u00a0 The heart in &#8220;amor&#8221; clinched it for me.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11357\" style=\"width: 448px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/KnightAyard.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11357\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11357\" title=\"KnightAyard\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/KnightAyard-764x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"438\" height=\"573\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11357\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It looks like Alastair has slain a hairy &#8220;dragon.&#8221; But it is only our dog Hannah enjoying the Florida winter sunshine.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">When he first saw the shirt, Harvey thought &#8220;amor&#8221; was missing an<em> e<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0He&#8217;s an Ivy Leage graduate so I needed to reassure myself that I had not made a serious error.\u00c2\u00a0 I did some quick research and found this definition\u00c2\u00a0in Wikipedia: &#8220;<em>amor: <\/em>\u00c2\u00a0meaning love in many languages.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 Whew!\u00c2\u00a0 I got it right.<\/p>\n<p>Alastair may never be knighted by the Queen of England.\u00c2\u00a0 Or maybe he will.\u00c2\u00a0 At any rate,\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0I&#8217;m sure he won&#8217;t be a failure&#8211;certainly not in the eyes of his adoring Nana.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Names are funny.\u00c2\u00a0 From generation to generation,\u00c2\u00a0they wax and wane in popularity.\u00c2\u00a0 When we named our son Ryan, I knew of only one other child by that name;\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0my sorority sister&#8217;s son\u00c2\u00a0was 6 years old on the other side of the &hellip;
