The sleeves and bonnet edge are trimmed with\u00c2\u00a0 entredeux and the fagotted lace.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0Through the years, I have collected some incredible heirloom goods, and this lace is one of my prizes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/fagottedlacedaygownbclose1brite1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-33319 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/fagottedlacedaygownbclose1brite1.jpg\" alt=\"fagottedlacedaygownb\" width=\"640\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/fagottedlacedaygownbclose1brite1.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/fagottedlacedaygownbclose1brite1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The acquisition of \u00c2\u00a0unusual pieces like this a usually the result of\u00c2\u00a0good luck or a sleuth&#8217;s nose.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0In this case, it was luck that connected me with an elderly lady who professed to have an entire attic full of antique laces which she was willing to sell me, piece by piece.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">She declared that her home was too cluttered for me visit to see the laces, but said she would bring some to me when she got a chance.\u00c2\u00a0 We had only two visits and I never heard from her again.\u00c2\u00a0 But this lace is one of the beauties I rescued from that scorching Florida attic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/fagottedlacescan5crop1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-33320 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/fagottedlacescan5crop1.jpg\" alt=\"fagotted lace\" width=\"424\" height=\"137\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/fagottedlacescan5crop1.jpg 424w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/fagottedlacescan5crop1-300x96.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 424px) 100vw, 424px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">You might have noticed that this lace is a galoon, which is a piece with two decorative edges and no straight edge for joining.\u00c2\u00a0 They are most often used for straps on a gown or sundress.\u00c2\u00a0 In fact,\u00c2\u00a0this\u00c2\u00a0yardage is\u00c2\u00a0actually two pieces of lace edging, each with a straight edge and a scalloped edge.\u00c2\u00a0 The two straight edges are fagotted together with yellow thread.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you look closely, you will see that the scallop is very shallow.\u00c2\u00a0 So I treated one side as if it were a straight edge and simply zig zagged it to the entredeux with my very fine 80 wt. Madeira cotona thread.\u00c2\u00a0 Thus, it serves as an edging.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/fagottedlacedaygownfbuttonholesbrite2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33326\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/fagottedlacedaygownfbuttonholesbrite2.jpg\" alt=\"fagottedlacedaygownfbuttonholesbrite\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/fagottedlacedaygownfbuttonholesbrite2.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/fagottedlacedaygownfbuttonholesbrite2-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Down the center front of the daygown is a precious strip of hand embroidery that has been in my stash for some 25 years.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 You may have noticed that I have frequently mentioned the time &#8220;25 years ago.\u00c2\u00a0&#8221; \u00c2\u00a0That was the year Rebecca, my youngest, was off to kindergarten and I was at liberty to pursue my love of sewing a little more freely.\u00c2\u00a0 So a lot happened while she was playing Ring-Around-the-Rosey.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Around that same time, an enterprising lady from Florida began importing hand embroidery from China.\u00c2\u00a0 Apparently, she herself started this cottage industry there, supplying the embroideresses with 36\u00e2\u20ac\u009d squares of Swiss batiste.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Older readers will probably remember the marking wheels that were used for marking darts.\u00c2\u00a0 With this tool she marked off lines across the fabric, like a child\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s writing paper, but at 6\u00e2\u20ac\u009d intervals.\u00c2\u00a0 The embroidery was stitched down the center of each section between the blue dots made by the wheel.\u00c2\u00a0 The beautifully stitched goods came only in these 36\u00e2\u20ac\u009d x 6\u00e2\u20ac\u009d lengths or the 36\u00e2\u20ac\u009d block.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The embroidered piece has a white circle placed at an appropriate place for buttonholes.\u00c2\u00a0 So I picked out the satin stitched\u00c2\u00a0 O&#8211;not a granito\u00e2\u20ac\u201dand worked the buttonholes there.\u00c2\u00a0 No measuring was needed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/zfagottedlacembydg2rot1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33322\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/zfagottedlacembydg2rot1.jpg\" alt=\"emby\" width=\"640\" height=\"127\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/zfagottedlacembydg2rot1.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/zfagottedlacembydg2rot1-300x59.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Long before I saw these goods, I had learned that you should buy such treasures when you see them, because they may be gone forever before you know it.\u00c2\u00a0 Sure enough, in a very short time, those pieces were unavailable, but not before I spent every dollar of my teaching money to buy several of the embroidered 36\u00e2\u20ac\u009d blocks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The patterns included white on white shadow embroidered bows and flowers, primary colored antique cars, pastel shadow worked Sunbonnet Sues, little bullion roses, trailing floral vines, flower bouquets\u00c2\u00a0 tied up with blue ribbons and others.\u00c2\u00a0 I have gotten so much pleasure from just looking at these for all these years that they have long since paid for themselves in entertainment value.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But finally, I am using some of them.\u00c2\u00a0 This daygown is just the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> piece I have used, so I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d better get busy sewing if I want to stitch these up into heirloom projects.\u00c2\u00a0 And if you ever see one of these hand embroidered pieces, I suggest you snatch it up.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Posted in freckled laundry&#8216;s &#8220;air your laundry friday&#8221; textile party.\u00c2\u00a0 Check it out!
