The slip refused to lie flat and still on the scanner bed.<\/p><\/div>\n

For \u00c2\u00a0Laurel’s Easter dress three matching heirloom laces were pulled from my stash, two edgings\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0and an insertion.\u00c2\u00a0 The narrow piece, used at the neckline, \u00c2\u00a0is 7\/8″ wide,\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0broader than I prefer but acceptable.<\/p>\n

That width on the slip neckline and armscyes seemed excessive because it would be flattened under the dress and might even peek out at the neck.\u00c2\u00a0 Rather than choose another lace pattern, I decided to reduce the size of the matching piece.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Now, if it had not been 2 a.m., I would have called Mildred Turner for advice.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s likely she\u00c2\u00a0can\u00c2\u00a0and has narrowed miles of\u00c2\u00a0edging by\u00c2\u00a0 twitching her\u00c2\u00a0nose,\u00c2\u00a0balancing the bolt on the machine head and\u00c2\u00a0waving a needle trolley in the air.\u00c2\u00a0 Remember,\u00c2\u00a0 her third book is<\/strong><\/em> titled Mimi’s Machine Magic<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Though it’s true that Mildred stays up late (and rises early!\u00c2\u00a0 Good grief!), I knew she was out of town visiting her youngest son, Matthew, and his family.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0So I didn’t call.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0I just had to\u00c2\u00a0figure\u00c2\u00a0something out on my own.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Zig zagging always reduces width, so I thought I would try that.\u00c2\u00a0 It worked!\u00c2\u00a0 I simply zig zagged (4.5 width, 1.5 length) over the straight edge, enclosing a\u00c2\u00a0length of machine quilting thread.\u00c2\u00a0 This reduced the width to a scant 1\/2″ .\u00c2\u00a0 It was then gathered ever so slightly and joined to entredeux.\u00c2\u00a0 The header looked a little heavy before attachment to the entredeux, but when it was finished, this bulk was not noticeable.<\/p>\n

If 1\/4″ does not seem like a significant reduction, compare\u00c2\u00a0the price of\u00c2\u00a0 two laces with that width difference!\u00c2\u00a0 One quarter inch counts.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0The amount of downsizing\u00c2\u00a0was enough to suit me.<\/p>\n

The underdress\u00c2\u00a0is made of Imperial broadcloth, chosen over batiste so that it could be worn as a stand alone dress if necessary.\u00c2\u00a0 By wearing only the slip until arrival, her freshly pressed \u00c2\u00a0100% cotton batiste dress doesn’t sport wrinkles from the seat belt.\u00c2\u00a0 With that in mind, I machine embroidered a tone-on-tone monogram from one of my favorites, OESD’s Dazzle Alphabet<\/em>, www.embroideryonline.com<\/a> so the garment would not be so plain.<\/p>\n

I’ve heard from several readers about their Easter sewing projects, all of which sound delightful.\u00c2\u00a0 Donna is making up the Dainty Designs pattern for her 2 year-old granddaughters.\u00c2\u00a0 She\u00c2\u00a0just\u00c2\u00a0found the pinstitch on her new Brother sewing\/embroidery machine and\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0is using it on these little frocks.\u00c2\u00a0 Judy has made her\u00c2\u00a07\u00c2\u00a0year-old cousin\u00c2\u00a0granddaughters matching dresses and hairbows that will be posted\u00c2\u00a0in this blog\u00c2\u00a0later.\u00c2\u00a0 Elizabeth is making Drew’s Smocked Bubble for her baby in a brown and blue plaid on white.\u00c2\u00a0 What a treat it would be if you all sent pictures to share!\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

5 yo Robert and 6 yo Laurel are here for their weekly overnight.\u00c2\u00a0 Robert read to me at bedtime from his exciting new book about the Oregon Trail.\u00c2\u00a0 His mother Shelly\u00c2\u00a0has been trying to steer his interest into something other than Egypt and pyramids and this book series seems to have done it.<\/p>\n

The worksheet shown is a list of things he would take if he were moving out west, like the book’s hero Joshua did\u00c2\u00a0in 1848.\u00c2\u00a0 His choices are so well thought out.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 This little 5 year-old would\u00c2\u00a0 take an air mattress, his teddy (of course!) \u00c2\u00a0and a lot of other\u00c2\u00a0practical items.\u00c2\u00a0 I hope he cultivates this good sense as he grows older.<\/p>\n

It’s homeschool for us\u00c2\u00a0tomorrow.\u00c2\u00a0 Aside from the usual academics, I hope Laurel can finally finish her quilt which only needs to be tied.\u00c2\u00a0 Robert will be working on a shop project with Granddad.\u00c2\u00a0 Later, our son Ryan, their father, will join us for\u00c2\u00a0grilled chicken\u00c2\u00a0while Shelly joins a group of homeschool moms for a dinner meeting.<\/p>\n
