There is so much to learn when you are a Nana!\u00c2\u00a0 But I do know that there are no Care Bear smocking plates.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0I felt a\u00c2\u00a0 challenge coming on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Looking through my smocking plates, I came across <em>Pandamonium<\/em> by Little Memories and\u00c2\u00a0knew\u00c2\u00a0that a single\u00c2\u00a0one of those bears could be transformed into a Care Bear.\u00c2\u00a0 Hurrah!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I had to regraph a portion of\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0the panda to get the white belly just right for the outline stitched rainbow.\u00c2\u00a0 Then the eyes were changed from the\u00c2\u00a0droopy, sad,\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0slanted straight stitches\u00c2\u00a0to perky French knots.\u00c2\u00a0 Voila!\u00c2\u00a0 I had me a Care Bear!\u00c2\u00a0 <!--more-->The\u00c2\u00a0next challenge was to sit the bear, 4 full rows tall,\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0with enough head room\u00c2\u00a0to remain well below the neck binding, enough to give the illusion that he was in the clouds.\u00c2\u00a0 And still\u00c2\u00a0it \u00c2\u00a0needed a border.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Smocking more\u00c2\u00a0rows in the front than over the shoulders, I thought, would solve that problem.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 This is a style\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0I&#8217;ve always liked.\u00c2\u00a0 I like to see a nice pouf at the shoulder and on a little one, that does not allow for many rows of smocking.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Smocking deeper in the center front and then tapering the pattern up to the sleeve seam allows you to\u00c2\u00a0utilize more picture smocking plates than\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0if you\u00c2\u00a0had smocked that same number of rows all the way around.\u00c2\u00a0 The rainbow colors were repeated in a wheat stitch pattern just below the neck binding.\u00c2\u00a0The diamond pattern was simply continued around to the back.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The dress itself is a ready to smock bishop made of polycotton microcheck.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 There&#8217;s that easy care\u00c2\u00a0component so popular with young mothers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The garment\u00c2\u00a0came with shirttail hemmed puff sleeves, pleated and ready to smock.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 I simply cut off the portion of the sleeves that fell just below the underarm seam and added a tatted insertion which\u00c2\u00a0used as beading.\u00c2\u00a0 Silk ribbon, 1\/8&#8243; wide, was woven through the insertion\/beading and a tatted edging joined to that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/CareBearback1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33452\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/CareBearback1.jpg\" alt=\"CareBearback\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/CareBearback1.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/CareBearback1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Instead of my\u00c2\u00a0preferred \u00c2\u00a0pearl buttons at the back, I used brightly colored &#8220;utility&#8221; buttons and didn&#8217;t feel one bit bad about it.\u00c2\u00a0 First, all of my bright rose pearl buttons had been used up on the unicorn 5th birthday dress.\u00c2\u00a0 And secondly,\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0this Care Bear dress\u00c2\u00a0is \u00c2\u00a0for everyday wear.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0It can stand proud in any American playground with\u00c2\u00a0its\u00c2\u00a0plastic buttons.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Laurel has enjoyed wearing it to school and to the park as well as to parties.\u00c2\u00a0 She is never careless, but she never worries much about getting it\u00c2\u00a0dirty because she knows,\u00c2\u00a0 as she told me,\u00c2\u00a0 that her \u00c2\u00a0Nana can always make her another one.\u00c2\u00a0 And she is right.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Laurel asked for a Care Bear dress, specifically Cheer Bear which, she informed me, \u00c2\u00a0is pink with a rainbow &#8220;belly badge.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 At the time, I didn&#8217;t know what a belly badge was.\u00c2\u00a0 I do now.
