{"id":1435,"date":"2009-09-15T22:54:26","date_gmt":"2009-09-16T02:54:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/?p=1435"},"modified":"2012-03-08T20:02:20","modified_gmt":"2012-03-09T01:02:20","slug":"fleece-lamb-baby-blanket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2009\/09\/15\/fleece-lamb-baby-blanket\/","title":{"rendered":"Fleece Lamb Baby Blanket"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/zfleeceLambblanketLhands.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1646\" title=\"fleeceLambblanketLhands\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/zfleeceLambblanketLhands-1024x702.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/zfleeceLambblanketLhands-1024x702.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/zfleeceLambblanketLhands-300x205.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/zfleeceLambblanketLhands.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For\u00c2\u00a0years\u00c2\u00a0I admired the gorgeous embroidered wool blankets featured in Australian Smocking and Embroidery.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0The first time\u00c2\u00a0I was invited to teach in Australia, I treated myself to enough gorgeous and extremely pricey 100% wool Onkaparinga\u00c2\u00a0(I just love to say that name&#8211;onka-pa-RING-a)\u00c2\u00a0to make \u00c2\u00a0a baby\u00c2\u00a0shawl just like those Aussie blankets.\u00c2\u00a0They were definitely old fashioned.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/zLambpolarblanket1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1633\" title=\"fleeceLambblanketclose\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/zLambpolarblanket1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"486\" height=\"440\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>After\u00c2\u00a0stowing away several pieces of \u00c2\u00a0gorgeous wool challis for several years\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0less than a year after tenderly carrying home my Onkaparinga, I discovered\u00c2\u00a0moth holes in much of the\u00c2\u00a0wool challis.\u00c2\u00a0 It had been enclosed in a zip lock\u00c2\u00a0bag and taken out only\u00c2\u00a0occasionally to be fondled.<\/p>\n<p>I was just sick about that loss but didn&#8217;t even want to think about how I would feel about\u00c2\u00a0chewed up\u00c2\u00a0Onkaparinga.\u00c2\u00a0So I double bagged it in plastic and packed it away\u00c2\u00a0in an airtight plastic bin, where it will likely die of old age and emotional neglect.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0What a wasted splurge!\u00c2\u00a0 On my next teaching trip to Australia, I\u00c2\u00a0indulged my fabric addition with\u00c2\u00a0yards of divine Liberty of London Tana lawn.\u00c2\u00a0 I can count on 100%\u00c2\u00a0 cotton.<\/p>\n<p>Polar fleece, however, \u00c2\u00a0is modern!!!!\u00c2\u00a0 It gives the same look without all the worry about moths and laundering.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Fleece\u00c2\u00a0is just an amazing fabric&#8212;warm, durable, easy care and available in an unlimited number of colors and patterns, not to mentioned reasonably priced.<\/p>\n<p>For some time now, I&#8217;ve been smitten with machine embroidered applique.\u00c2\u00a0 When Amazing Designs came out with their &#8220;Plush&#8221; applique collections&#8211;Plush Lambs, Bunnies, Bears, Lions and more&#8211;I was enthralled.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Using white polar fleece for the lambs gave me exactly the look I sought.<\/p>\n<p>This blanket is a 45&#8243; square of pink polar fleece edged with a quality Cluny lace edging.\u00c2\u00a0 Earlier, I had learned that Cluny laces shrink considerably, so pre-shrinking is a must.<\/p>\n<p>Joining it to the fleece had me stumped for a while, as my preferred pin stitch or earlier roll and whip method would be inappropriate on this fabric.\u00c2\u00a0 In\u00c2\u00a0 the end, I\u00c2\u00a0serged a narrow 3-thread overlock and then tiny zig zagged the cluny over the serging.\u00c2\u00a0 Most cluny laces have a large header, and this one is no exception.\u00c2\u00a0 So the header covered the serging and it looked very neat.<\/p>\n<p>Then I sat down to the computer to ready my embroidery designs.\u00c2\u00a0 There is text that accompanies many of the designs, all in a juvenile font.\u00c2\u00a0 Wanting to personalize this for Laurel, I extracted letters from various sets of text until I had what\u00c2\u00a0was needed to write &#8220;Laurel.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Four\u00c2\u00a0years later,\u00c2\u00a0this blanket still is used for naps and wrapping up dolls.\u00c2\u00a0 It looks surprisingly good for all the laundering and heavy use.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0I\u00c2\u00a0doubt an Onkaparinga blanket would hold up so well to\u00c2\u00a04 years of a pre-schoolers use and abuse, our Florida heat and year round moths.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For\u00c2\u00a0years\u00c2\u00a0I admired the gorgeous embroidered wool blankets featured in Australian Smocking and Embroidery.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0The first time\u00c2\u00a0I was invited to teach in Australia, I treated myself to enough gorgeous and extremely pricey 100% wool Onkaparinga\u00c2\u00a0(I just love to say that name&#8211;onka-pa-RING-a)\u00c2\u00a0to make &hellip;
