With the able assistance of her mother, Wanda Stewart, the ensemble that Judy Day created\u00c2\u00a0 for her granddaughter Courtney is the result of months of stitching as well as\u00c2\u00a0proof positive of\u00c2\u00a0 immeasurable grandmotherly love.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00c2\u00a0set grew to include so many items&#8212;dress, slip, purse, garment bag, hanger, headpiece and\u00c2\u00a0Bible cover.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0The many interesting and intricate details will require more than one post, so please come back for the\u00c2\u00a0final installment.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Each piece is exquisite, so you won&#8217;t want to miss any of it.\u00c2\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll let Judy tell you her interesting story about\u00c2\u00a0the challenges and\u00c2\u00a0specifications that went into designing this dress.\u00c2\u00a0 Certainly,\u00c2\u00a0she\u00c2\u00a0met and exceeded those challenges to create a\u00c2\u00a0garment worthy of this all important\u00c2\u00a0milestone in Courtney&#8217;s spiritual journey.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<\/p>\n<p>This was one of those projects that gave me a lot of time to reflect on family and how much I enjoy sewing for them.\u00c2\u00a0 I am blessed in that both of my daughters as well as my daughter-in-law appreciate my love of sewing and the projects I stitch for them and their families.<\/p>\n<p>When my daughter-in-law returned home from her grandmother&#8217;s funeral, Courtney was just a year old.\u00c2\u00a0 I was handed an antique embroidered panel from her grandmother&#8217;s living room curtains as she said, &#8220;I would like to have something from this on Courtney&#8217;s First Communion dress.\u00c2\u00a0&#8220;\u00c2\u00a0 She explained that she had played &#8220;bride&#8221; under this\u00c2\u00a0beautiful embroidered \u00c2\u00a0sheer\u00c2\u00a0when she herself was\u00c2\u00a0a little girl.<\/p>\n<p>That request came to haunt me over the next 6 years.\u00c2\u00a0 I knew it would mean a lot to my DIL and her mother, but the panel was just not speaking to me.\u00c2\u00a0 Time and time again, I took it out\u00c2\u00a0for a fresh look.<\/p>\n<p>So early this spring, with the dress front and back pieces smocked and beaded, waiting to be sewn together, I spread the curtain out over the pool table.\u00c2\u00a0 It stayed there, draped to the floor for a couple of days.\u00c2\u00a0 Still, it was not speaking to me!<\/p>\n<p>One morning as I was going down the stairs, the beautiful cutwork-like &#8220;beading&#8221; near the hemline literally jumped out at me! I had been looking at the embroidery and not the beading.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/practice1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32459\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/practice1.jpg\" alt=\"practice\" width=\"640\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/practice1.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/practice1-300x179.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The creative inspiration for the dress came from the\u00c2\u00a0 April 2007 issue of <em>Creative Needle <\/em>magazine which included a smocked Bible cover by Janet Sewell.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0The\u00c2\u00a0article is entitled<em> First Communion.\u00c2\u00a0<\/em> (This issue also has an article about how to make a <a title=\"Treasure (Bug) Bag\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2010\/04\/15\/treasure-bug-bag\/\">Bug Castle<\/a>, by Janice Ferguson.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/frontBrite1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32460\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/frontBrite1.jpg\" alt=\"frontBrite\" width=\"413\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/frontBrite1.jpg 413w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/frontBrite1-193x300.jpg 193w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 413px) 100vw, 413px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The dress was smocked from the shoulder to the midriff with\u00c2\u00a0 half space, 2-step baby waves forming diamonds.\u00c2\u00a0 Twenty four rows were pleated&#8212;that meant 48 separate rows of smocking!\u00c2\u00a0 3mm pearl glass seed beads were smocked into the design at the top and bottom of each diamond.<\/p>\n<p>The dress fabric was cotton Swiss batiste from Martha Pullen (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marthapullen.com\">www.marthapullen.com<\/a>).\u00c2\u00a0 The dress pattern was <em>Dottie&#8217;s Day Dress <\/em>by Collars, Etc. pattern company (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.collarsetc.com\">www.collarsetc.com<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The embroidery design at the lower front of the dress is from the <em>Trinity Crosses<\/em> collection from Martha Pullen and was stitched with 100 weight Madeira silk thread. I sized the design larger in Designer&#8217;s Gallery Custom Works with Size Works.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/small_cross11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32461\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/small_cross11.jpg\" alt=\"small_cross1\" width=\"640\" height=\"437\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/small_cross11.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/small_cross11-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My DIL wanted individual crosses around the hem of the dress so I used CustomWorks to remove 2 of the Trinity Crosses.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/hemlineWslipBrite1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32462\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/hemlineWslipBrite1.jpg\" alt=\"hemlineWslipBrite\" width=\"640\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/hemlineWslipBrite1.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/hemlineWslipBrite1-300x157.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The antique beading was attached to the hemline with the pinstitch, using a wing needle.\u00c2\u00a0 English lace was softly gathered and attached to the bottom of the beading as well as to the puff sleeves which were set into the armhole with entredeux.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/bodice_backBrite3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32463\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/bodice_backBrite3.jpg\" alt=\"bodice_backBrite\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/bodice_backBrite3.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/bodice_backBrite3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The back of the dress features a 4&#8243; wide sash and covered buttons.<\/p>\n<p>I used the same pattern for the slip, trimming the seam allowance from the neckline and armholes.\u00c2\u00a0 This allowed me to add a tiny bit of lace at the neck and armhole to give it a more finished look.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Cslipcrop1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32464\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Cslipcrop1.jpg\" alt=\"Cslipcrop\" width=\"303\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Cslipcrop1.jpg 303w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Cslipcrop1-142x300.jpg 142w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 303px) 100vw, 303px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To get a\u00c2\u00a0smaller lace, I just cut off part of the width.\u00c2\u00a0 I used a tiny stitch length to sew it onto the slip and then zig zagged over the seams.\u00c2\u00a0 Depending on the density of the lace pattern, this might be risky on a garment that will be washed several times.<\/p>\n<p>A smaller version of the <em>Trinity Crosses <\/em>is embroidered on the bodice of the slip.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/crosses2crop2B1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32465\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/crosses2crop2B1.jpg\" alt=\"crosses2crop2B\" width=\"467\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/crosses2crop2B1.jpg 467w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/crosses2crop2B1-218x300.jpg 218w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 467px) 100vw, 467px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The beading and lace on the dress just did not look proportional to me so the lower edge of the slip has 3 rows of lace so it peeks out from under the dress.\u00c2\u00a0 It gives the illusion that the lace is wider than it actually is.
