for fear of offending many of you who are likely well informed on the topic, I&#8217;m going to tell you about it anyway.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 For the few beginners amongst us I am going to give my standard classroom &#8220;lecture&#8221; to make this pattern.\u00c2\u00a0 They were mechanized but not motorized, thus the name hand loom.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31186\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/bluebowedgin.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31186\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31186\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/bluebowedgin.jpg\" alt=\"SWISS HANDLOOM wide edging used on the back yoke of the gown\" width=\"800\" height=\"614\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/bluebowedgin.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/bluebowedgin-300x230.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31186\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SWISS HANDLOOM wide edging used on the back yoke of the gown<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The size of the loom was limited by the size of the\u00c2\u00a0 room in which it was housed.\u00c2\u00a0 Almost always, that measurement was approximately 4\u00c2\u00a0 1\/2 yds&#8211;13\u00c2\u00a0 1\/2 feet.\u00c2\u00a0 That would be a good sized work room.\u00c2\u00a0 So a true handloom never comes in a greater length than\u00c2\u00a0 4\u00c2\u00a0 1\/2 yds.<\/p>\n<p>Cottage industries hold less and less allure for young people, eager to move on&#8211;I imagine to get out of the Alps.\u00c2\u00a0 I envision the old movie Heidi with it&#8217;s picturesque cottage and\u00c2\u00a0 majestic mountain scenery.\u00c2\u00a0 This scene likely had more appeal to a 6-7 year old girl than to a young adult who has lived there all his\/her life.\u00c2\u00a0 Mr. Russell at renowned M.E. Feld Company told me that many of his customers were purchasing handlooms in anticipation of their predicted &#8220;collector status&#8221; and sure-to-follow price hikes when they are no longer being made.<\/p>\n<p>I think that time has come.\u00c2\u00a0 A google search for &#8220;Swiss handlooms&#8221; sent me to sites where even simple designs are being sold for up to $80 per yard! In each instance, the price is justified by the explanation that &#8220;these are no longer being made.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>These beauties are so expensive that they are being sold by the quarter yard for $15-20.\u00c2\u00a0 My first thought was sure!\u00c2\u00a0 You can ask any price you want, but does anyone buy them?\u00c2\u00a0 There were several that were listed as &#8220;SOLD OUT&#8221; so it seems they do.<\/p>\n<p>I was shocked to find the sweet little floral design shown on the peach bishop dress (with the smocking design in the previous post) is now available for $60 py.\u00c2\u00a0 I don&#8217;t recall the exact amount, but it seems when I bought it in 1981, oblivious to the distinction between Swiss\u00c2\u00a0 handlooms and Swiss embroideries, the price was $8-10 py.<\/p>\n<p>If my next grandchild is not a little girl (still a twinkle in her daddy&#8217;s eye and expected to arrive no sooner than April, 2012) , my personal stash of these handlooms will be for sale in the &#8220;store&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 But the prices will be much less than those mentioned above!!!!<\/p>\n<p>But I digress&#8230;&#8230;.Swiss embroideries are simply very fine machine embroideries on Swiss batiste.\u00c2\u00a0 They can come in any length, made as they are on a motorized machine with no limitation on length other than the length of the piece of fabric being embroidered.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31187\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/bluesSwEmbfront.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31187\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31187\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/bluesSwEmbfront.jpg\" alt=\"SWISS EMBROIDERY blue bow insertion right side\" width=\"800\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/bluesSwEmbfront.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/bluesSwEmbfront-300x59.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31187\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SWISS EMBROIDERY blue bow insertion right side<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31188\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SwissEmbackbow.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31188\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31188\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SwissEmbackbow.jpg\" alt=\"SWISS EMBROIDERY blue bow, wrong side.
