While she was here, we made a matching &#8220;purse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This\u00c2\u00a0 is a nice little sewing project for a child, as the purse foundation can be a ready made handkerchief requiring just 4 lines of straight stitch to be finished.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Or it can be more elaborate, like a square with lace edging or bias binding and machine embroidery.\u00c2\u00a0 Note:\u00c2\u00a0 I attached the bias binding but Laurel did\u00c2\u00a0 the remainder of the sewing.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of your choice, you begin with a finished square.\u00c2\u00a0 Large squares make large purses, smaller squares make smaller purses.\u00c2\u00a0 Nothing tricky here.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Laurel&#8217;s purse began with a 16&#8243; square of sturdy white cotton, bound with black bias, to mimic the pockets on her ladybug dress.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32980\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/purse-bound-square.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32980\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-32980 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/purse-bound-square.jpg\" alt=\"purse bound square\" width=\"640\" height=\"605\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/purse-bound-square.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/purse-bound-square-300x283.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32980\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Step #1&#8211;16&#8243; square with finished edges<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Next, embroider one or more corners. \u00c2\u00a0 Be sure to embroider on the &#8220;right&#8221; side of the square.\u00c2\u00a0 The &#8220;wrong&#8221; side of the fabric will be the outside of the purse.\u00c2\u00a0 The folded corners, with or without embroidery, will be the attractive feature.\u00c2\u00a0 The &#8220;wrong&#8221; side outer surface of the purse will be covered, mostly, with the folded corners.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32981\" style=\"width: 443px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/corner-bug.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32981\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-32981 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/corner-bug.jpg\" alt=\"corner bug\" width=\"433\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/corner-bug.jpg 433w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/corner-bug-300x284.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 433px) 100vw, 433px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32981\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Step #2&#8211;embroider one or more corners<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This single ladybug was extracted from a design of three in Zundt Design&#8217;s Pissaro Collection.\u00c2\u00a0 Though it was the smallest of three, it was still too large.\u00c2\u00a0 So it was reduced in BuzzSize by 30% and then stitched with 50 wt. DMC machine embroidery thread to compensate for the drastic reduction.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Even minimized,\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 this big bug still looks like a major player in the garden.<\/p>\n<p>The square was placed flat on a table, wrong side up.\u00c2\u00a0 Then the four corners were folded toward the center.\u00c2\u00a0 There is no magic number or measurement.\u00c2\u00a0 Just try to keep the newly formed corner triangles the same size.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Larger corner triangles mean smaller purse storage area.\u00c2\u00a0 Don&#8217;t be surprised when a handkerchief is not exactly square and the triangles seem irregular.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32982\" style=\"width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/ready-to-sew.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32982\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-32982 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/ready-to-sew.jpg\" alt=\"ready to sew\" width=\"625\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/ready-to-sew.jpg 625w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/ready-to-sew-292x300.jpg 292w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32982\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Step #3&#8211;draw stitching line with washaway marker<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Draw a stitching line for the casing with a water soluble marker.
