\"Fergusons-cabin\"<\/a>

Fergusons’ Carolina Cabin 1996<\/p><\/div>\n

We are in North Carolina at our mountain cabin in the High Country, between Boone and Banner Elk, the source of inspiration for this quilt.\u00c2\u00a0 As usual, one of the first things we did was check the quilt to see if it had suffered any noticeable wear and tear from our guests.\u00c2\u00a0 As usual, the quilt was fine and we took a quick stroll down memory lane as we examined it.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

The all flannel quilt is machine quilted, with\u00c2\u00a0each applique’d heart capturing a memory identified by text.\u00c2\u00a0It was made with the fanciest machine of the day, the\u00c2\u00a0Pfaff 7550.\u00c2\u00a0 It was\u00c2\u00a0to-die for!\u00c2\u00a0 I doubted I would ever want another machine. Note:\u00c2\u00a0 I grew older and wiser very shortly after that! But it is still a wonderful machine.<\/p>\n

\"Camp-Broadstone\"<\/a>

Camp Broadstone 1988-1995<\/p><\/div>\n

Before it was ours, the cabin was owned\u00c2\u00a0by friends who had children\u00c2\u00a0 the same ages as our Ryan and Rebecca.\u00c2\u00a0 Martha had located terrific Camp Broadstone just 20 minutes from the cabin and\u00c2\u00a0shared\u00c2\u00a0this information with her friends.\u00c2\u00a0 Each summer she led a caravan of mothers and little girls from our home in central Florida to this cabin.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0We were packed tight that first night, with giggling girls sprawled on the floor and\u00c2\u00a0tucked into the loft.<\/p>\n

The children were dropped off at\u00c2\u00a0camp the next day and for two glorious weeks\u00c2\u00a0the moms\u00c2\u00a0delighted in the cool mountain weather and\u00c2\u00a0 respite from the responsibilities of home and family.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0In our nightgowns, we drank coffee on the front deck until mid-morning, then shopped or read or chatted.\u00c2\u00a0 I smocked.<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0After we picked up our daughters from camp,\u00c2\u00a0 we came home to Florida the next day, after spending time at the Mast General Store and the Candy Barrel.<\/p>\n

In 1996, after Rebecca had aged out of camp, we bought that same\u00c2\u00a0cabin.\u00c2\u00a0 I was beside myself with\u00c2\u00a0excitement so\u00c2\u00a0I made this quilt.\u00c2\u00a0 In\u00c2\u00a0that cold and bitter January, we drove to Boone for the closing and\u00c2\u00a0a short ski holiday at our new vacation home.<\/p>\n

A week\u00c2\u00a0before we were to leave, I\u00c2\u00a0 reminded Bob that he needed to arrange for the power to be turned on in our name.\u00c2\u00a0 “Sure, Honey, I’ll take care of it.”<\/p>\n

A few days later, I reminded him to arrange the water to be turned on and learned that he hadn’t yet taken care of the power.\u00c2\u00a0 But he assured me that he would get it done that day.\u00c2\u00a0 A day later, he still had not made arrangements for these critical connections.<\/p>\n

I called his office to remind him that there were only two business days left to get this done. Then I\u00c2\u00a0dropped the activation bomb–\u00c2\u00a0we had\u00c2\u00a0to get the cable connected.<\/p>\n

“OH\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0NO!!! I’ll call them right now!\u00c2\u00a0 Goodbye!”\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0He hung up and immediately took care of all three tasks.<\/p>\n

We’re into the third generation of Fergusons who have retreated\u00c2\u00a0to this cozy cabin\u00c2\u00a0for family fun and renewal.\u00c2\u00a0 The quilt records memories from the early years and now, those\u00c2\u00a0memorable activities\u00c2\u00a0are being relived by generation #3,\u00c2\u00a0our grandchildren.<\/p>\n

There are blocks featuring Grandfather Mountain, gem mining, skiing at HawksNest, and more.<\/p>\n

Last fall, Laurel, Robert and Alastair went to the Candy Barrel<\/a> and the Mast General.\u00c2\u00a0 They hiked Grandfather Mountain, went gem mining and climbed the rocks behind the cabin.\u00c2\u00a0 When their thin Florida blood couldn’t keep them warm, they huddled under this quilt and watched the Gator football games on tv.<\/p>\n

Now that Laurel and Robert can read, they\u00c2\u00a0enjoy\u00c2\u00a0examining the quilt\u00c2\u00a0as if it were\u00c2\u00a0a check list, noting\u00c2\u00a0what they have already done and planning what they will do when they are a little older.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Skiing is a high priority.\u00c2\u00a0 Soon, Alastair will make his own memories with this quilt.<\/p>\n

In a few days,\u00c2\u00a0Robert and Laurel\u00c2\u00a0will\u00c2\u00a0join us\u00c2\u00a0here.\u00c2\u00a0 We’ll go to the Candy Barrel, the Mast General, the gem mine and\u00c2\u00a0visit Camp Broadstone.\u00c2\u00a0 Perhaps next summer Laurel will be a camper there.\u00c2\u00a0 If she does,\u00c2\u00a0she’ll take\u00c2\u00a0this quilt for her bunk.<\/p>\n

As I look at the quilt now,\u00c2\u00a0I think of how much better it could be.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0If I replaced it with a\u00c2\u00a0new one featuring machine embroidery instead of little applique’d patches of novelty fabric,\u00c2\u00a0 with really special machine quilting\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0with lettering that you could read even if you didn’t already know what it said, the quilt would be more attractive.<\/p>\n

But it wouldn’t be the quilt that I\u00c2\u00a0placed here so proudly in 1996.\u00c2\u00a0 It wouldn’t be the quilt that my children snuggled under before they had children of their own.\u00c2\u00a0It wouldn’t be\u00c2\u00a0 the quilt that we spread on the front deck for the babies to play and nap on.<\/p>\n

If I do make another, it won’t be a replacement.\u00c2\u00a0 I’ll keep this one.<\/p>\n
