We didn&#8217;t see much snow but we did see four deer traipsing across the mountain behind the cabin. There were four deer behind the cabin, but this is the only one who lingered long enough for this photo.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Even though we came to relax, there are always chores to be done.\u00c2\u00a0 Bob cleaned out the gutters and climbed the extension ladder to take down some quilts that needed de-dusting and then fixed the damper.\u00c2\u00a0 I spent time putting up\u00c2\u00a0 Christmas decorations, brushed the wall quilts, and scrubbed the stone face of the fireplace which had some soot accumulation.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;d like to know who made this mess by forgetting to open the damper!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/fireplace13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32214\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/fireplace13.jpg\" alt=\"fireplace1\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/fireplace13.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/fireplace13-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The\u00c2\u00a0 souvenir quilt hangs above the hot tub in the cabin. The country colors and down home style fit perfectly in there.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Cabin-Quilt-hottub1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32215\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Cabin-Quilt-hottub1.jpg\" alt=\"Cabin Quilt hottub\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Cabin-Quilt-hottub1.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Cabin-Quilt-hottub1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This picture was taken for the vacation home rental site to show off the new hot tub. \u00c2\u00a0 So the quilt isn&#8217;t centered or shown in its entirety.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ve cropped the image but wish I had a better photo of it hanging.\u00c2\u00a0 The lighting was bad the day I was taking snapshots,\u00c2\u00a0 so I took the quilt outside.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s just thrown over a rock in the picture at the top.<\/p>\n<p>It was made for the 3-day Country Quilting Bee that Suzanne Sawko and I hosted several years ago.\u00c2\u00a0 We offered a variety of quilt technique classes for students from several states.\u00c2\u00a0 The friendship quilt was signed by each participant, making a textile record of this special gathering.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 It was a really fun, special event.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32216\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/old-church-then1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32216\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-32216 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/old-church-then1.jpg\" alt=\"old-church-then\" width=\"600\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/old-church-then1.jpg 600w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/old-church-then1-300x217.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32216\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Glenwood Church 1886<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The\u00c2\u00a0 was quilting bee school was held in the 1885 old church\/fellowship hall of our community Glenwood Presbyterian Church.\u00c2\u00a0 For many years it served as the school house Monday through Friday and as the house of worship Sundays and Wednesday evenings.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s likely that many other bees were held here, as the church has always been the heart of our little community.\u00c2\u00a0 The quilt&#8217;s corner church blocks record the location.<\/p>\n<p>As was the common custom, this building served as the school house Monday through Friday and the house of worship Sundays and Wednesday evenings.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 For manyof you, the age of this building is unimpressive.\u00c2\u00a0 But in Florida, this is a pretty ancient structure.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/DSC03777.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32217\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/DSC03777.jpg\" alt=\"quilt corner\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/DSC03777.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/DSC03777-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The technique for this quilt is so unique and so easy.\u00c2\u00a0 Beginning with 8 or 10&#8243; blocks of muslin as the foundation, two diagonal lines are drawn from corner to diagonally opposite corner, 1&#8243; on either side of the center.<\/p>\n<p>Scrap fabric is cut into random width strips, from 3\/4&#8243; to 2-1\/2&#8243;trips are cut.\u00c2\u00a0 The first strip is placed face down across the 2&#8243; center aisle, marked off by those lines.\u00c2\u00a0 With a 1\/4&#8243; seam allowance,\u00c2\u00a0 that strip is stitched in place.<\/p>\n<p>That strip is then flipped to the right side and pressed in place.\u00c2\u00a0 The next strip is placed face down, raw edges matching, and stitched in place.\u00c2\u00a0 After the first strip, the seam allowance doesn&#8217;t matter.\u00c2\u00a0 You just stitch, flip, and press until the square is covered.<\/p>\n<p>Repeat on the opposite side of the aisle, which is now 1-3\/4&#8243; wide.\u00c2\u00a0 With the application of the first strip, in the same manner as first strip on the opposite side of the aisle, the aisle is now reduced to 1-1\/2&#8243;, wide enough for a signature.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/DSC03779.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32218\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/DSC03779.jpg\" alt=\"quilt center\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/DSC03779.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/DSC03779-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Blocks are squared up and sewn together.\u00c2\u00a0 The button at each corner covers any imperfections, adds interest and separates the signatures.\u00c2\u00a0 This is a great beginner quilt.\u00c2\u00a0 Laurel will use this pattern for her next quilt.<\/p>\n<p>After re-reading this, it doesn&#8217;t seem very clear.\u00c2\u00a0 If anyone requests clarification, I will do a mock up of the block as a sort of tutorial to make this easy technique easy to understand.<\/p>\n<p>The fabric used for the backing just makes me smile.\u00c2\u00a0 Much like the print, Glenwood is a closely knit community with large homes, small homes, little farms, a tiny post office, the church, and orange groves. \u00c2\u00a0 Okay, so they look like apples on the fabric, but I choose to believe that they are dead ripe tangerines, whose color appears nearly red.<\/p>\n<p>It\u00c2\u00a0 was fun to label buildings and homes on the fabric with names of neighbors.\u00c2\u00a0 If I had had an embroidery machine at the time, I could have labeled locations more nicely.\u00c2\u00a0 At the time, I was so thrilled to have the capability to stitch the text with my Pfaff 7550.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/DSC03782.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32219\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/DSC03782.jpg\" alt=\"quilt back 1\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/DSC03782.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/DSC03782-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/DSC03780.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32220\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/DSC03780.jpg\" alt=\"cabin back all\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/DSC03780.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/DSC03780-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This quilt further proof that sewing projects and textiles are intertwined with almost everything I do.\u00c2\u00a0 Is it that way for you?\u00c2\u00a0 What have you stitched that records a significant event in your life?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re still in North Carolina enjoying some R&amp;R.\u00c2\u00a0 When we arrived the weather was miserable, cold and snowy.\u00c2\u00a0 What a difference a day makes!
