These sweet baby outfits\u00c2\u00a0were made by\u00c2\u00a0my friend Haydee, one of my students\u00c2\u00a0the last time\u00c2\u00a0I taught in Puerto Rico.\u00c2\u00a0 http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2010\/07\/20\/teaching-in-puerto-rico\/<\/a><\/p>\n

She speaks little\u00c2\u00a0English and I speak almost no Spanish.\u00c2\u00a0 My entire Spanish vocabulary consists of “Donde est el bano?” (Where is the bathroom?) so it is impossible to communicate about our sewing projects except through photos.<\/p>\n

For that reason, I can give you no information about her selection of fabric or embroidery design.\u00c2\u00a0 Haydee did preface these pictures with the name of the pattern, Wendy Schoen’s Vintage Baby Bubble<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 www.wendyschoendesign.com<\/a><\/p>\n

In my stash is some of the trim she used on the legs of the pink lamb bubble, so I can tell you that it is Swiss and was available from Martha Pullen.<\/p>\n

Haydee is an incredibly talented seamstress whose accomplishments are even more laudable by virtue of the fact that she is relatively new to sewing.<\/p>\n

When I met her in San Juan\u00c2\u00a02 years ago, she had been sewing only one year and her entries into the school project competition earned her a first place in two categories.<\/p>\n

It was\u00c2\u00a0explained\u00c2\u00a0that a group of experienced sewists had taken\u00c2\u00a0Haydee under their wings.\u00c2\u00a0 For the past year, these dear friends\u00c2\u00a0had invited her to join their weekly in-home sewing sessions,\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0tutored her in the basics and\u00c2\u00a0sent her home with magazines and\u00c2\u00a0books to study.<\/p>\n

Haydee and her friends, dubbed\u00c2\u00a0 “The Posse,”\u00c2\u00a0attended the event together, wearing specially made vests embroidered with\u00c2\u00a0Loralie’s Sewphisticats <\/em>designs.<\/p>\n

It was a joy to watch them interact.\u00c2\u00a0 Ever so patiently, quickly, and quietly,\u00c2\u00a0they translated my instructions, asked questions for\u00c2\u00a0Haydee and made certain that she and all the other non-English speaking students were on the same page with the\u00c2\u00a0other half\u00c2\u00a0of the class. What a pleasure it was to teach these ladies!<\/p>\n

Now, Haydee is a prolific seamstress, competent\u00c2\u00a0in all phases of construction and machine embroidery.\u00c2\u00a0 You will see more of her projects in future posts. Even without the guidance of her friends,\u00c2\u00a0Haydee would have become proficient.\u00c2\u00a0 But how long would it have taken her?\u00c2\u00a0 Would the frustration of\u00c2\u00a0hard learned lessons\u00c2\u00a0diminish her enthusiasm?\u00c2\u00a0 How much better to have careful tutelage and shared fellowship with like minded friends?<\/p>\n

In the past, that’s how women learned to stitch.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Before the advent of sewing schools, needlework magazines, YouTube videos, topic specific dvd’s and how-to books, we all learned from our family and friends.\u00c2\u00a0 It was just as the Beatles sang,\u00c2\u00a0 ” I get by with a little help from\u00c2\u00a0my friends”.\u00c2\u00a0 Many of us carry on that tradition as we teach friends, children and grandchildren to sew.<\/p>\n

I can only imagine the satisfaction\u00c2\u00a0Haydee’s friends feel as they\u00c2\u00a0monitor her progress and sewing adventures.<\/p>\n
