For those rare moments when our sewing machines are not in use, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s nice to protect them from dust with\u00c2\u00a0 attractive covers. Before I made this one for my mother\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s birthday, she used\u00c2\u00a0a bath\u00c2\u00a0towel to protect her beloved Ellageo from Florida\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s relentless sunshine.\u00c2\u00a0 This looks so much nicer and does a better job of keeping off the dust and rays.<\/p>\n

I could have\u00c2\u00a0made up\u00c2\u00a0the pattern myself.\u00c2\u00a0 But why spend a lot of time drafting and fussing over getting the fit over the embroidery unit just right. Phooey! I have grandchildren to sew for and haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t got a minute to waste.<\/p>\n

At Monica’s Miscellany, a site which seems to have been “under construction” now for several months, I discovered a great bargain.\u00c2\u00a0 For a very reasonable price you can purchase the basic cover pattern for most Brother, Babylock and Viking Designer embroidery machines and\u00c2\u00a0 get a set of designs\u00c2\u00a0specifically for the project.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Sounded good to me!<\/p>\n

I had such a good time selecting sewing sayings and embellishing the cover.\u00c2\u00a0 Decorative stitches covered the seams and buttons, bows, measuring tape ribbon, and charms added further pizzazz.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0The colors in the embroidery matched the colors in\u00c2\u00a0Mom’s \u00c2\u00a0sewing room. She\u00c2\u00a0was \u00c2\u00a0so proud of\u00c2\u00a0her birthday present\u00c2\u00a0that she\u00c2\u00a0 took it with her to classes and embroidery club at The Sewing Garrett in South Daytona Beach—like she needed to cover it in class.\u00c2\u00a0 Humphhhh.<\/p>\n

A sewing machine cover is not a new idea.\u00c2\u00a0 The sewing machine was invented in 1846 and it’s likely\u00c2\u00a0 that women have been covering their prized possessions since then.\u00c2\u00a0 I found patterns for these cabinet protectors in two of my vintage needlework catalogues.<\/p>\n

The text is charming:\u00c2\u00a0 “If you keep me going, I’ll do your sewing,”\u00c2\u00a0 “Sew a while and be in style,”\u00c2\u00a0 “\u00c2\u00a0Sewing hours are happy hours,”\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0and the corny but sweet “With all my heart I sew the seams that part.”\u00c2\u00a0 I can’t imagine that all those parted seam sewing hours were happy, but then again, I don’t know what else she had to do\u00c2\u00a0that day.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s hard to imagine how women of the 1920’s, without our modern conveniences, managed to squeeze out time to hand embroider these tender covers.\u00c2\u00a0 Women’s love affair with the sewing machine goes waaaaaay back.<\/p>\n
