She never makes &#8220;a dress.&#8221; It&#8217;s always a complete ensemble for each of the two girls and their dolls, usually including matching hairbows for all and often coordinating flip flops.<\/p>\n<p>Though the idea for rickrack smocking is not Judy&#8217;s original idea, her execution is always original and fabulous.\u00c2\u00a0 Enjoy Judy&#8217;s chronicle of the dresses.~~~~<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Kennedy11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31289\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Kennedy11.jpg\" alt=\"Kennedy1\" width=\"551\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Kennedy11.jpg 551w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Kennedy11-206x300.jpg 206w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 551px) 100vw, 551px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Last year, when I realized the little grandchildren would be together at the beach, I saw a photo opportunity.\u00c2\u00a0 When we got to the beach, the girls kept saying, &#8220;You mean we can get in the water with our GOOD dress on?&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 I assured them that it was just salt water and the dresses would wash&#8230;..in the end, the dresses did get wet and sandy and no one got in &#8220;trouble!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div id=\"attachment_31290\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/chit_chatting__in_the_watercrop1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31290\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-31290 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/chit_chatting__in_the_watercrop1.jpg\" alt=\"chit_chatting__in_the_watercrop\" width=\"800\" height=\"509\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/chit_chatting__in_the_watercrop1.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/chit_chatting__in_the_watercrop1-300x190.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pretty little girls chit chatting in the surf&#8230;..<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Other beach goers have been edited out of the pictures, but there were several people watching them play and pose.\u00c2\u00a0 So if you get the opportunity, take you g&#8217;children to the beach wearing their &#8220;good&#8221; clothes and then stand back and watch.\u00c2\u00a0 It made for a full heart!\u00c2\u00a0 NOTE:\u00c2\u00a0 Most of our photos from that day were not posed and those are my favorites.<\/p>\n<p>I went to my &#8220;resource center&#8221; (aka my stash) for the fabric.\u00c2\u00a0 I had pink gingham, but in different shades&#8230;..I had promised myself NOT to purchase new fabric until the &#8220;stash&#8221; was sewn.\u00c2\u00a0 So different shades of pink it was.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson&#8217;s shirt, made up from many blue and white stripes and blue gingham, was purchased. It compliments Kennedy and Courtney&#8217;s dresses well in the pictures.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/view_of_loopscrop1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31291\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/view_of_loopscrop1.jpg\" alt=\"view_of_loopscrop\" width=\"800\" height=\"385\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/view_of_loopscrop1.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/view_of_loopscrop1-300x144.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sewbeautiful.com\" target=\"_blank\">Sew Beautiful<\/a> version of this dress was featured in Issue # 130, 2010, Vol. 24, # 3.\u00c2\u00a0 The article, entitled <em>Rickrack Bishop<\/em>, is by Cindy Hayes.<\/p>\n<p>I knew this would be my last shot to smock bishops for my granddaughters since they were getting so tall.\u00c2\u00a0 I used<a href=\"http:\/\/www.childrenscornerstore.com\" target=\"_blank\"> Children&#8217;s Corner<\/a> pattern<em> Gwen&#8217;s Ruffle Sleeve Bishop.<\/em> The smocking for this dress is all back smocking.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/where_does_my_thumb_go1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31292\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/where_does_my_thumb_go1.jpg\" alt=\"where_does_my_thumb_go\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/where_does_my_thumb_go1.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/where_does_my_thumb_go1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As I was smocking, the girls were more interested than usual, so I jumped on the opportunity to let them smock for the first time.\u00c2\u00a0 They were excited and tried very hard to put the stitches in just right.\u00c2\u00a0 I wanted this to be a positive experience (and since it was not going to show) the stitches were deemed beautiful and laying just perfectly!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/such_concentration1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31293\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/such_concentration1.jpg\" alt=\"C smocksXX\" width=\"800\" height=\"709\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/such_concentration1.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/such_concentration1-300x265.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At the last minute, I decided the dolls needed matching dresses.\u00c2\u00a0 I altered Debbie Glenn&#8217;s<a href=\"http:\/\/www.loveandstitches.com\/dolls.htm\" target=\"_blank\"> Bitty Bishops, Bonnets &amp; dresses have loops of white rickrack placed over the smocking and held in place with pink French knots.\u00c2\u00a0 Who knew French knots took so long!!!\u00c2\u00a0 So the dolls have 3 rows of rickrack stitched by machine.<\/p>\n<p>The techniques for the rickrack loops and the rickrack banded hem are outlined in the article and on the <em>Sew Beautifu<\/em>l web site. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<\/p>\n<p>I love everything about the rickrack smocked bishops.\u00c2\u00a0 But I especially love the way Judy slipped in a smocking lesson when she recognized the moment of interest and readiness.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Keep up the good work, Judy!\u00c2\u00a0 I think the world would be a better place with\u00c2\u00a0 more smockers and more smocked dresses.\u00c2\u00a0 What do you think?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;
