This sweet little dress has been more trouble than I ever expected. \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Have you ever had a good idea, visualizing an easy re-make on an item with potential, and then been sorry you ever started?\u00c2\u00a0 Well, that’s exactly what happened with this ivory linen size 1 frock.<\/p>\n

Purchased on a shopping trip in Puerto Rico with June Mellinger, I thought with a simple modifications,\u00c2\u00a0 I would love it.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 WRONG!!!!<\/p>\n

We had finished teaching at an event there<\/a> and were scouring old San Juan for treasures.\u00c2\u00a0 In that absolutely enchanting enclave, we strolled into a shop filled with linens and baby things, both machine and hand embroidered.<\/p>\n

June went for the linen housewares and scrutinized\u00c2\u00a0 much of the machine embroidery.\u00c2\u00a0 She was tickled to find several items embroidered with designs featured on Brother embroidery machines.\u00c2\u00a0 Obviously, at least one cottage industry was alive in well on this tropical island.<\/p>\n

I had a grandbaby on the way, so I headed for the baby display.\u00c2\u00a0 What beautiful things there were–\u00c2\u00a0 finely crocheted booties, delicate shadow work diaper shirts, embroidered burp clothes.\u00c2\u00a0 It was Nana heaven!<\/p>\n

Then I spotted this little dress. The basic linen garment was nicely hand embroidered and well constructed.\u00c2\u00a0 But I disliked the gold metallic ribbon threaded through synthetic beading and gold metallic lace edging the hem and sleeve ruffles.\u00c2\u00a0 Tatting would be nice, I thought.\u00c2\u00a0 How hard could it be to replace the gold?\u00c2\u00a0 June just rolled her eyes.<\/p>\n

At home, after what seemed like an eternity, I finally had the beading released from both the yoke and skirt.\u00c2\u00a0 Another eternity later, I\u00c2\u00a0 had picked out all the nasty metallic lace and was forced to accept the fact\u00c2\u00a0 that this re-do<\/em> was more of an un-do. \u00c2\u00a0 <\/em> By starting fresh, I would have spent far less time creating a dress similar to this re-do\/un-do project.<\/p>\n

I could have pulled out a hunk of linen, machine or hand embroidered the yoke and skirt and made up a dress I genuinely liked in one enjoyable\u00c2\u00a0 White Wednesday<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0 instead of what seemed like a tedious week of Sundays.<\/p>\n

Oh well.\u00c2\u00a0 The dress is done and I do like it.\u00c2\u00a0 But next time I’ll start from scratch.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
