{"id":18550,"date":"2012-05-23T16:18:08","date_gmt":"2012-05-23T20:18:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/?p=18550"},"modified":"2014-12-30T00:57:35","modified_gmt":"2014-12-30T05:57:35","slug":"puerto-rican-diaper-set","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2012\/05\/23\/puerto-rican-diaper-set\/","title":{"rendered":"Puerto Rican Diaper Set"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/blue-diapershirt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30860\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/blue-diapershirt.jpg\" alt=\"blue-diapershirt\" width=\"714\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/blue-diapershirt.jpg 714w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/blue-diapershirt-267x300.jpg 267w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 714px) 100vw, 714px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This diaper shirt was returned to me in a bundle of infant clothing I had loaned a friend for the use of her first grandchild.\u00c2\u00a0 It is another treasure I brought back from one of my teaching trips to San Juan.\u00c2\u00a0 As I looked over this sweet garment and tripped through the memories of those special sewing schools, I was reminded of the beautiful baby clothes those Puerto Rican ladies make.<\/p>\n<p>With the sweltering tropical climate, island babies need simple garments to keep comfortable.\u00c2\u00a0 The shops in San Juan are well stocked with exquisitely made garments embellished with delicate handwork.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>While most of the baby clothes I saw for sale were linen or 100% cotton, this little shirt is unusual in that it is easy care.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 All the embroidery is hand stitched, though the scallops are machine made.<\/p>\n<p>This would be easy enough to recreate, especially by using machine embroidery.\u00c2\u00a0 It reminds me of the precious little in-the-hoop diaper shirts from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.customkeepsakes.com\/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=CC-02\">Custom Keepsakes<\/a> (NOTE:\u00c2\u00a0 Open the slide show to see the finished diaper shirts in this collection.)<\/p>\n<p>After this photo was taken, I came across the matching diaper cover, with a vertical row of buttons above each leg and scallops all around.\u00c2\u00a0 Even with the poly blend fabric, the scallops are clean and crisp.<\/p>\n<p>I was a little surprised at what good condition this set is after being worn by at least four babies.\u00c2\u00a0 Both Laurel and Robert wore it, 15 months apart, and then a few years later Alastair enjoyed his first summer in this shirt set.\u00c2\u00a0 Then my friend&#8217;s grandchild wore it.\u00c2\u00a0 Doesn&#8217;t it still look good.?\u00c2\u00a0 I wonder how many other babies will spend summer days in this cool shirt.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;
