She loves pretty linens and monograms, just like her mother, so this pair of pillow slips should please her.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;C&#8221; monogram is from<em> Martha Pullen&#8217;s\u00a0 2002 Embroidery Club<\/em>\u00a0 collection.\u00a0 I chose this style\u00a0 because of its angular lines, a nice contrast to all the swirls of the embroidery below.\u00a0 Years ago, I attended a quilting workshop at which the instructor casually threw out this tip.\u00a0 She mentioned that when piecing with geometric shapes, she likes to quilt with curves.\u00a0 Conversely, she thought that curved pieces look best with rectolinear quilting.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve never regretted following her advice for quilts and frequently have applied it to embroidery designs.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The embroidered bow and fil tire&#8217; whatever&#8212;it looks just like the seed cones dropping off my Little Gem magnolia tree&#8211; are a single 4&#215;4 design from Martha&#8217;s <em>Vintage Collection I,<\/em> Disc1,\u00a0 copied,\u00a0 pasted and mirror-imaged.\u00a0 Nestled into the fil tire&#8217; are two tiny R&#8217;s,\u00a0 for my Rebecca and her husband.This is really a lovely design.\u00a0 I especially like the light, fagoting style stitches that fill the ribbons.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/monogrammed-birthday-pc4crop1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30896\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/monogrammed-birthday-pc4crop1.jpg\" alt=\"monogrammed-birthday-pc4crop\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/monogrammed-birthday-pc4crop1.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/monogrammed-birthday-pc4crop1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Madeira hem is pin stitched in place.\u00a0 I learned a valuable lesson on this project.\u00a0 I change my needles frequently, as recommended.\u00a0 But somehow, I never put made that practice a habit when using wing needles.<\/p>\n<p>First I noticed that the reach stitch was not picking up. I thought my Brother Duetta might need adjusting, so I moved to the Brother ULT 2003D.\u00a0 On that machine the stitch picked up, but the dull wing chewed up the Madeira hem for quite a distance before I realized what was happening.<\/p>\n<p>As it turned out, I was unhappy with my original thread choice and that first pillowcase was a reject.\u00a0 After that, I examined all my wing needles and found several that were noticeably dull&#8211;like a ball point needle.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca loves pima cotton.\u00a0 When she went off as a freshman to University of Florida\u00a0 the dormitory room was furnished with non-standard size bunk beds (30&#8243; x 80&#8243;).\u00a0 Becca\u00a0 declared that she <strong><em>could not<\/em><\/strong> possibly sleep on the commercially available polycotton bunk bedding available.\u00a0 So I custom made 2 sets of fitted sheets with the pima cotton she had grown up sleeping on.\u00a0 She was the veritable Princess and the Pea!<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, 6 weeks later she moved into the sorority house, with standard twin mattresses.\u00a0 But\u00a0 a few years later a precious family friend whom we have known since before her birth, went off to Florida.\u00a0 I had put the pima\u00a0 sheets aside hoping that she would end up at Florida or at least another school with odd-sized\u00a0 beds.\u00a0 So the sheets were passed on to Anna Christine, another little Princess who loves pima cotton.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/088Becca-flrsm1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30897\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/088Becca-flrsm1.jpg\" alt=\"088Becca-flrsm\" width=\"320\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/088Becca-flrsm1.jpg 320w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/088Becca-flrsm1-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rebecca loves bright colors, but she has already changed their bedroom color scheme twice in the 5 years they have been married. For that reason, she asked for neutral pillowcases.\u00a0 These should work anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#8217;t help recalling my first encounter with Madeira applique&#8217;, just before she was born.\u00a0 In a neighboring town, a very upscale children&#8217;s shop was going out of business.\u00a0 When I came across it, I rushed in and made several purchases, including a baby pillowcase with Madeira applique&#8217;d\u00a0 blue birds and a scalloped pink hem, all stitched by hand.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, my sewing experience was limited to cafe curtains for the kitchen, so I was intrigued\u00a0 It&#8217;s no coincidence that I love Madeira applique&#8217; and that my Nana nursery is themed with bluebirds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/074Becca21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30898 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/074Becca21.jpg\" alt=\"074Becca2\" width=\"534\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/074Becca21.jpg 534w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/074Becca21-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 534px) 100vw, 534px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It&#8217;s such a joy to stitch something special for my special, precious daughter.\u00a0 Slumbering on these pillowcases, I know she will have sweet dreams.\u00a0 And I hope they all continue to come true.\u00a0 Happy birthday, Rebecca.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A pair of these pillowcases were stitched for my daughter&#8217;s birthday, which is this week.
