R.H. Barham<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And I surely don&#8217;t want that to be said of my granddaughter, Laurel.\u00a0 The poor child has allergies and without warning, her\u00a0 little freckled nose can run amuk. Having a handkerchief in her pocket gives a measure of confidence, now that she is, in fact, seven years old.\u00a0 She does NOT like to be embarrassed.<\/p>\n<p>This week, Laurel sang the national anthem with the Orlando Symphony, along with several other children.\u00a0 Each represented a school or group and was invited to sing at a special performance for children.<\/p>\n<p>And what does this have to do with handkerchiefs?<!--more--> She choose to wear her smocked <a title=\"At Liberty\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/02\/at-liberty\/\">Liberty of London sundress<\/a>.\u00a0 The handkerchief above was tucked in the smocked pocket and coordinated nicely.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/smocked-pocket-finished1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32050\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/smocked-pocket-finished1.jpg\" alt=\"smocked-pocket-finished\" width=\"638\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/smocked-pocket-finished1.jpg 638w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/smocked-pocket-finished1-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/smocked-pocket-finished1-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This plain white 8&#8243; linen square was lying idle in my handkerchief collection.\u00a0 With its sweet variegated purple crocheted edge, it seemed to fill the bill, though I like to add a monogram whenever possible.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve always been intrigued by children&#8217;s handkerchiefs.\u00a0 How did any survive the rough and tumble life in a child&#8217;s pocket?\u00a0 How many were just lost? And all\u00a0 that heavy laundering!\u00a0 In an earlier <a title=\"Handkerchiefs\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/19\/handkerchiefs\/\">post about handkerchiefs<\/a>, I recalled a childhood friend with whom I rode my bike to school each morning.\u00a0 Daily, his mother&#8217;s parting words were &#8220;Curtis, do you have a clean handkerchief?&#8221;\u00a0 Daily, his parting words were, &#8220;Yes, Mama,&#8221; and off to school we rode.<\/p>\n<p>Handkerchiefs have fallen out of favor with today&#8217;s children and I wonder why.\u00a0 No matter that the need for a nose wipe can arise at any moment&#8211;no child carries a box of Kleenex around.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/ballethankiepink2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32051\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/ballethankiepink2.jpg\" alt=\"ballet hankie\" width=\"640\" height=\"619\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/ballethankiepink2.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/ballethankiepink2-300x290.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some time ago, I made this hanky for Laurel to keep in her ballet bag.\u00a0 Like the playful kitties below, it, too, is the standard 8&#8243; square.\u00a0 The cats are printed on this sturdy, machine hemmed fabric.\u00a0 I can just imagine a little girl smiling as she slipped this in her pocket<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/childrens-hankies-kitty.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32052\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/childrens-hankies-kitty.jpg\" alt=\"childrens hankies kitty\" width=\"634\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/childrens-hankies-kitty.jpg 634w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/childrens-hankies-kitty-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/childrens-hankies-kitty-297x300.jpg 297w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 634px) 100vw, 634px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Given the run of her nose, I hope to make more.\u00a0 With less than a yard of edging and an 8-9&#8243; scrap of linen or batiste, the little project is quick, useful and so much prettier than a purse pack of tissue.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d really like to see pictures of any children&#8217;s handkerchiefs you have collected or made.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t you just love this quote?\u00a0 I&#8217;ve always appreciated Ambrose Pierce&#8217;s wit.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8220;Handkerchief,&#8221; n. A small square of silk or linen, used in various ignoble offices about the face and especially serviceable at funerals to conceal the lack of tears.
