{"id":20091,"date":"2011-12-27T00:01:51","date_gmt":"2011-12-27T05:01:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/?p=20091"},"modified":"2015-01-15T01:44:58","modified_gmt":"2015-01-15T06:44:58","slug":"christmas-11-celebration-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2011\/12\/27\/christmas-11-celebration-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Christmas &#8217;11~First Celebration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Needlecraft-Xmas-28.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20144\" title=\"Needlecraft Xmas 28\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Needlecraft-Xmas-28.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"388\" height=\"575\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Needlecraft-Xmas-28.jpg 388w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Needlecraft-Xmas-28-202x300.jpg 202w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 388px) 100vw, 388px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I hope you all had a happy, merry Christmas day, filled with family, friends and love.\u00c2\u00a0 We&#8217;ve just had another joyous celebration with our daughter, Rebecca, Harvey and 2-1\/2 year old Alastair. \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Regrettably,\u00c2\u00a0 I took very few pictures the entire two days.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas Eve was spent with Harvey&#8217;s family, who seem like our very own.\u00c2\u00a0 At Carol and Alan&#8217;s absolutely gorgeous, huge, decorated-to-the-nines country home, we enjoyed a delicious supper of gumbo, homemade slaw, special bakery bread, fresh strawberry pie and bread pudding.\u00c2\u00a0 Our son-in-law Harvey grew up just outside New Orleans so it&#8217;s no surprise that his mother has significant expertise in Cajun cuisine, not to mention everything else edible.\u00c2\u00a0 The company was as good as the food.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/A-Xmas-suit11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33177\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/A-Xmas-suit11.jpg\" alt=\"A-Xmas-suit1\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/A-Xmas-suit11.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/A-Xmas-suit11-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alastair wore his Christmas suit and was, of course, the star of the evening, shining for his adoring grandparents,\u00c2\u00a0 89 year-old great-grandmother Ruby, aunts and uncles.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Why didn&#8217;t I snap a shot of him charming Ruby or showing everyone how high he can jump?\u00c2\u00a0 Why didn&#8217;t I take a picture of him alone in the music room playing (well, hitting the keys) on his grandmother&#8217;s baby grand piano? Or pulling back the curtains to examine the electric candles and the outdoor lights?\u00c2\u00a0 I missed so many photo ops.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Patterns for the shirt and shorts were both from Martha Pullen&#8217;s excellent book, <em>Heirloom Sewing for Jack and Jill<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 The burgundy velveteen shorts were cut from the &#8220;straight front knee pants&#8221; pattern which I especially like. They button at the waist on each side and have elastic only in the back.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/collar-close11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33178\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/collar-close11.jpg\" alt=\"collar-close1\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/collar-close11.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/collar-close11-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The shirt is a linen blend embroidered with the Santa from OESD&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.embroideryonline.com\/Pack_Pdfs\/53350.pdf\"><em> I\u00c2\u00a0 Believe in Santa<\/em><\/a> collection by Nancy Halvorsen.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;d like to stitch out every design in this beautiful collection.\u00c2\u00a0 I had to remove the I believe text because the design was too large for the collar.\u00c2\u00a0 Even then, it was too large to suit me, so I reduced it by 20%.<\/p>\n<p>Resizing stitch intensive designs can be tricky.\u00c2\u00a0 But by substituting standard 40 wt. machine embroidery thread with a lighter weight it stitched out beautifully.<\/p>\n<p>Because the design is so dense, I used 80\/2 wt. Madeira Cotona whenever I had the necessary color available.\u00c2\u00a0 White, ecru, tan, gray, and pink\u00c2\u00a0 80\/2 wt. thread was used for the pink face, for Santa&#8217;s facial hair, and the fur on his hat.\u00c2\u00a0 This collection is very well digitized with shading that gives depth and texture to the designs.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 DMC 50\/2 or Mettler 60\/2 cotton embroidery thread was used for all the other colors.<\/p>\n<p>The burgundy trim on the collar and sleeves is middy braid, first straight stitched in place on either side.\u00c2\u00a0 Then a decorative stitch was magical at Rebecca and Harvey&#8217;s home.\u00c2\u00a0 They hosted a brunch for the family, featuring a buffet of Harvey&#8217;s culinary delights,\u00c2\u00a0 The menu included amazing, better-than-the-original CinnaBuns, three kinds of quiche, coffee cake, fresh citrus fruit salad, eggnog, coffee, juice and cookies made by Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33180\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">cupcake tree loaded with cookies and fresh strawberries<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Harvey cooks with a passion comparable to my passion for sewing.\u00c2\u00a0 Early in November, he watched a cooking show that featured a roast holiday goose.\u00c2\u00a0 He <em>had<\/em> to make that.\u00c2\u00a0 So the organic goose was ordered from North Dakota and was as delicious as advertised.\u00c2\u00a0 He had also made goose gravy with a little raspberry jelly for flavor, baked artisan bread and an apple pie.\u00c2\u00a0 What a dinner!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/goose1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33181\" set a lovely table with her grandmother&#8217;s china and the<a title=\"Monogrammed Napkins \u00e2\u20ac\u0153rCr\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2009\/12\/28\/monogrammed-napkins-rcr\/\"> linen napkins<\/a> I had embroidered for her, folded into silver napkin rings.\u00c2\u00a0 It was beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>Watching Alastair open his gifts was so much fun.\u00c2\u00a0 Just the day before, he had watched Polar Express and embraced the line, &#8220;I&#8217;ve wanted this my whole life!&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 But he remembered it as &#8220;In my whole life!&#8221; and squealed this phrase with emphatic arm gestures before opening each of his presents. How happy was he to find a new pair of yellow bumblebee boots under the tree!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/A-boots.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33182\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/A-boots.jpg\" alt=\"A boots\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/A-boots.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/A-boots-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He was sooo cool in his Santa shirt and boots.\u00c2\u00a0 In his eyes, it was the perfect outfit for an 80 degree Florida Christmas day. I used red corduroy for Santa&#8217;s hat, minkee for his beard and fleece for the fur on his hat.\u00c2\u00a0 It is surrounded by a built in design frame on my Brother Duetta 4500D.<\/p>\n<p>Can you tell it was a wonderful Christmas?
