Do you know?\u00c2\u00a0 I would really appreciate any information you could share.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/antique-lace-portraits-FI2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30743\" alt=\"antique background\/field surrounding the busts appears to be a sort of tatting or crochet. \u00c2\u00a0 The fill pattern in parts of\u00c2\u00a0 each figure remind me of Battenburg techniques.\u00c2\u00a0 But for all I know, there may be an obscure, obsolete needleart for creating such stitched images.\u00c2\u00a0 I can say with certainty that they were made by hand.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/antique-lace-portrait-guy21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30744\" alt=\"antique placement of the intricate stitch patterns create a portrait so clear that you might recognize this regal personage or his ancestors if you had bumped into them at the latest royal wedding.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It seems likely that they represent some very important historical figures.<\/p>\n<p>Lately, I&#8217;ve been reading a lot of English history.\u00c2\u00a0 From what I&#8217;ve read and the portraits I have seen, the textile figures appear to be from the Tudor era.\u00c2\u00a0 I think it&#8217;s okay to speculate so I think they could be Queen Mary (1516-58) and her Spanish husband, Phillip II.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21288\" style=\"width: 457px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/MaryPhillip01.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21288\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21288\" title=\"MaryPhillip01\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/MaryPhillip01.jpg\" width=\"447\" height=\"557\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/MaryPhillip01.jpg 447w, class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mary and her husband Felipe of Spain Oil on canvas English School, 17th century National Maritime Museum, Greenwich<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He was said to be very handsome and, to me, he looks the part of a dandy, Latin lover.\u00c2\u00a0 <em>Note: If anyone thinks this guy is handsome, you should see my husband!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The most complimentary description of Queen Mary said she was clean and plain.\u00c2\u00a0 This prim lady just seems grim, but if she knew what Phillip was doing with the ladies at court, Mary had good reason to look id=\"caption-attachment-30745\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Is there a royal rule against smiling?<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>These portraits hang in the little sitting room that is part of a guest suite in our circa 1926 home.<\/p>\n<p>Almost 20 years ago, they were purchased at an estate sale, pinned to a sheet of cardboard.\u00c2\u00a0 If any interest is expressed, I&#8217;ll write a post about that once-in-a-lifetime textile shopping spree.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<em> And I did&#8211;here is the <a title=\"Once-in-a-lifetime Estate Sale Shopping Spree\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/23\/once-in-a-lifetime-estate-sale-shopping-spree\/\">link<\/a>.<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0 Occasionally, I still dream about it!<\/p>\n<p>When I brought Phillip\/Felipe and Mary home, I intended to get them framed, but one thing and then another got in the way.\u00c2\u00a0 About 5 years later, my darling, thoughtful daughter teamed up with her father to get the portraits framed for my birthday.\u00c2\u00a0 Needless to say, I was just thrilled to be able to hang them and gaze daily at the exquisitely portrayed royal couple.<\/p>\n<p>Had I known this birthday gift plan was in the offing, I would have blocked the lace to their intended shape.\u00c2\u00a0 But the poor framer was very intimidated by their apparent age,\u00c2\u00a0 uniqueness, and perceived fragility.\u00c2\u00a0 So he just placed them on the acid-free stock as best he could.<\/p>\n<p>I hope spring is creeping into your lives and gardens.\u00c2\u00a0 This past week we had all three grandchildren for some time and their youth reminds me of the beautiful spring we are enjoying.<\/p>\n<p>Now I am busy smocking Laurel&#8217;s Easter dress.\u00c2\u00a0 But my
