For his fourth birthday party, our grandson Robert\u00c2\u00a0decided on\u00c2\u00a0two themes, Autobots and Spiderman. It was just too hard for him to chose one over the other, so it was a duo-theme celebration. For this special occasion, I would so love to have made him a button on suit with an heirloom style lace edged collar.<\/p>\n

But\u00c2\u00a0Robert is\u00c2\u00a0a Huckleberry Finn kind of kid– no fuss, no shoes and, if he thinks he can get away with it, no clothes.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0He prefers to wear what he calls “short sleeve pants” and loves nothing better than a new Spiderman or transformer shirt. The hugs he gives me when I deliver his\u00c2\u00a0“character” \u00c2\u00a0duds\u00c2\u00a0make it all worth while.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

For his birthday, I\u00c2\u00a0made\u00c2\u00a0Robert two\u00c2\u00a0Autobot and\u00c2\u00a0 two Spiderman shirts.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 On party day, he grinned from ear to ear as he got dressed in\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0one of the Spiderman shirts. But he was awestruck when Spiderman himself showed up at the front door.<\/p>\n

All of the boys, from three year old cousin Mikey who has had open heart surgery twice in his short life, to eight year old cousin Zachary, stood silent and gawking as Spiderman squatted down to their level and wished Robert happy birthday.<\/p>\n

Then little Mikey broke from the crowd and tackled Spiderman with a big hug.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s a good thing Spidey is in such good shape, because Mikey nearly knocked him over.\u00c2\u00a0 Apparently, this little guy has dealt with scarier\u00c2\u00a0individuals than a lanky\u00c2\u00a0dude in a Spiderman suit, so he was nonplused.\u00c2\u00a0 After that hug, it was supervised chaos.<\/p>\n

For party favors, each boy got a superhero cape.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 They were made from $1 py satiny fabric from the WalMart clearance table and simply serged with a 3-thread rolled hem.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0The serging was done\u00c2\u00a0in a contrasting color that matched the 1″ neck band which bound the gathers.<\/p>\n

A clear vinyl pocket was sewn just above the hemline at the center back.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 When the boys arrived, they selected their favorite superhero from an assortment of images\u00c2\u00a0and logos sized to\u00c2\u00a0slip into the pocket.\u00c2\u00a0 Suddenly, the young guests were transformed into Batman, Superman and others of great renown, most of whom I didn’t recognize.\u00c2\u00a0 Now the boys were\u00c2\u00a0bona fide\u00c2\u00a0and empowered.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Robert’s \u00c2\u00a0mother\u00c2\u00a0throws the most\u00c2\u00a0fabulous children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s birthday parties. She combined the themes by sending the\u00c2\u00a0superheroes on a mission\u00c2\u00a0to bombard WANTED posters of bad transformers with water balloons. Other undesirables lurking in the back yard were\u00c2\u00a0hosed\u00c2\u00a0down by the\u00c2\u00a0boys with huge squirt guns. Spiderman played games with them, like Spidey Says.<\/p>\n

\"SpidermanAutobotcake\"<\/a>\"Spidermancake\"<\/a><\/p>\n

After\u00c2\u00a0making the\u00c2\u00a0neighborhood a safer place and spending some time cooling\u00c2\u00a0off in the pool, the\u00c2\u00a0hungry\u00c2\u00a0superheroes chowed down on Spiderman or Autobot cake and ice cream.<\/p>\n

I used a Wilton pan for the\u00c2\u00a0Spiderman cake but was stymied when it came to drawing out the necessarily precise geometric design for the Autobot cake. Then I recalled the design templates I had printed out for the Autobot embroidery on the table cloth (see photo below). I cut\u00c2\u00a0up the template pieces, placed them on the plain frosted cake and scored the frosting to get the die lines.\u00c2\u00a0 I removed the paper piece and\u00c2\u00a0then\u00c2\u00a0filled in the shapes with buttercream frosting. Robert liked\u00c2\u00a0his cakes as much as his shirts.<\/p>\n

Before our grandchildren were born,\u00c2\u00a0 I vowed that I would never sew cartoon characters or some of the garish\u00c2\u00a0characters I saw other\u00c2\u00a0grandmothers stitching for their grandsons.\u00c2\u00a0 But now I realize that the goal is to make the\u00c2\u00a0boy happy. If Spiderman and Autobots make Robert happy, then that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s what I will sew for him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
