{"id":22227,"date":"2012-04-16T05:54:43","date_gmt":"2012-04-16T09:54:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/?p=22227"},"modified":"2015-01-08T22:25:23","modified_gmt":"2015-01-09T03:25:23","slug":"antique-lace-galoons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2012\/04\/16\/antique-lace-galoons\/","title":{"rendered":"Antique Lace Galloons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes, it seems that all my posts overlap.\u00c2\u00a0 This is one of those times.<\/p>\n<p>When I blogged about the <a title=\"Easter Sewing~Finished!!!\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2012\/04\/07\/easter-sewingfinished\/\">shadow smocked Easter dress<\/a> for my granddaughter, I mentioned that I would tell you about the lace I used.\u00c2\u00a0 And I will.<\/p>\n<p>As I was gathering my thoughts, it occurred to me that the most interesting thing about the lace is the use of the galloon as insertion.\u00c2\u00a0 So I want to tell you about that and other galloons I have used for both insertion and edging.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32960\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/galoon-FI2.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32960\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-32960 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/galoon-FI2.jpg\" alt=\"galoon FI\" width=\"640\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/galoon-FI2.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/galoon-FI2-300x148.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32960\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">French Val galloon, with two decorative edges, 1-3\/4&#8243; wide<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The antique lace I used for my granddaughter&#8217;s Easter dress was purchased at a veritable <a title=\"Once-in-a-lifetime Estate Sale Shopping Spree\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/23\/once-in-a-lifetime-estate-sale-shopping-spree\/\">once-in-a-lifetime estate sale<\/a> where I still sometimes shop when I am in Dreamland.\u00c2\u00a0 The creamy French Val lace is a beautiful ivory color, achieved by age rather than dye. Two\u00c2\u00a0 bolts of a classic pattern available yet today came home with me.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32961\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/ant-lace-ivory-edge1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32961\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32961\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/ant-lace-ivory-edge1.jpg\" alt=\"French Val edging, 1-1\/4&quot; wide\" width=\"640\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/ant-lace-ivory-edge1.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/ant-lace-ivory-edge1-300x165.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32961\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">French Val edging, 1-1\/4&#8243; wide<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I found the intricacy of\u00c2\u00a0 the pattern in combination with the gentle color to be very pleasing.\u00c2\u00a0 But I needed insertion for the skirt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you look carefully at the scalloped edges on the galloon, you will see how easily it converted to an insertion.\u00c2\u00a0 Without the perfectly straight lines of traditional insertion, the galloon requires a little more care when it is stitched to the flat skirt fabric.\u00c2\u00a0 But it certainly passed.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 The soft curve of the scallops make this do-able. More dramatically curved edges would have been a major challenge.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32962\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a <a title=\"Lemon Meringue Pie\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2010\/04\/02\/lemon-meringue-pie\/\">Easter dress<\/a> two years ago, a very unique piece of fagoted galloon was used as insertion in the fancyband<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/fancy-band.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" Chery Williams <a title=\"Lace Tape Wedding Ring Dress~White Wednesday\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/29\/lace-tape-wedding-ring-dress-2\/\">Wedding Ring Dress<\/a>, a galloon was used for the edging on the sleeves, collar, and at the hem.\u00c2\u00a0 Of course, there was no gathering thread, so I first rolled and whipped one side over a white machine quilting thread.\u00c2\u00a0 It worked just fine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/wed-ring-sleeve.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32967\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/wed-ring-sleeve.jpg\" alt=\"wed ring sleeve\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/wed-ring-sleeve.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/wed-ring-sleeve-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And one more thing&#8230;..On a few occasions, I have split a wide galloon into two edgings.\u00c2\u00a0 By rolling and whipping over a heavy thread, quilting or 30\/2 cotton, you can turn that galloon into twice as much serviceable yardage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Galloons are most often used for straps on nightgowns or sundresses.
