Just look at this spring scene in her back yard!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Judy Day has continued her tradition of gorgeous Easter dresses and hairbows for both of her granddaughters and their dolls.\u00c2\u00a0 These are very different from the heirloom confections she has always made.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 But as we all know, as little girls grow a little older, they like contemporary garments.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Here is Judy&#8217;s tale of how\u00c2\u00a0 these dresses came about.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This idea for this year&#8217;s Easter dresses for my DGDs actually started last summer when I was asked to make a store sample for <a href=\"www.bsewinn.com\">B Sew Inn<\/a> (BabyLock dealer)in Springfield, MO.\u00c2\u00a0 I fell in love with the dress from the picture on the front of the book, &#8220;<em>Rosie and Me<\/em>&#8220;\u00c2\u00a0 by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michelles-designs.com\/\">Michelle Griffith<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/MDrosieandmeGOODfront.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22280\" title=\"MDrosieandmeGOODfront\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/MDrosieandmeGOODfront.jpg\" width=\"386\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/MDrosieandmeGOODfront.jpg 386w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/MDrosieandmeGOODfront-231x300.jpg 231w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 386px) 100vw, 386px\" \/><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The book has the pattern,\u00c2\u00a0very detailed instructions on construction and a CD in the back of the book with the machine\u00c2\u00a0embroidery designs.\u00c2\u00a0 The book also contains the patterns, instructions for the American Girl doll dress along with smaller versions of the embroidery for the dolls.\u00c2\u00a0 This is a no fail book\u00c2\u00a0for someone who\u00c2\u00a0is just learning, as she walks you through each step with written directions and color pictures.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the techniques included are\u00c2\u00a0pintucks, making piping, cutting on the bias, scallops on the hem and the collar, and embroidery design placement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Courtney_and_Julie1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30686\" alt=\"Courtney_and_Julie\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Courtney_and_Julie1.jpg\" width=\"286\" height=\"558\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Courtney_and_Julie1.jpg 286w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Courtney_and_Julie1-153x300.jpg 153w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 286px) 100vw, 286px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Of course I wanted exactly the same fabric that was pictured on the book.\u00c2\u00a0 Once again <a href=\"http:\/\/www.farmhousefabrics.com\">Farmhouse Fabrics<\/a> came to the rescue.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I placed the order on line and then called as\u00c2\u00a0I was not sure I had chosen the correct &#8220;hot pink&#8221; gingham.\u00c2\u00a0 They pulled the order and said there was another pink that matched better&#8230;.what great customer service!<\/p>\n<p>The fabric arrived in about\u00c2\u00a03 days.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0It was lovelier than I had imagined.\u00c2\u00a0 I made the model for the store and decided to wait until Easter to make\u00c2\u00a0Kennedy and Courtney&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0dresses.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Kennedy_and_McKenna1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30687\" alt=\"Kennedy_and_McKenna\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Kennedy_and_McKenna1.jpg\" width=\"344\" height=\"555\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I did make a few deviations from the instructions.\u00c2\u00a0 Since my DGDs do not live close, I decided to use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.childrenscornerstore.com\">Children&#8217;s Corner<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0 pattern &#8220;Louise&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I have used it several times and all the needed adjustments had been made.\u00c2\u00a0The little girls\u00c2\u00a0saw the model dress and ask that I omit the collar on the dresses.\u00c2\u00a0 Instead, I put tiny piping around the neckline and the armholes to give it a more finished look.<\/p>\n<p>As I was gathering the skirts, I realized the fabric was sheer enough that the girls were going to need slips.\u00c2\u00a0 (too late to make a full slip or a mall run&#8230;the dresses needed to get in the mail.\u00c2\u00a0 After all, I had only known for 6 months exactly what I was going to make!)\u00c2\u00a0 So, I cut a piece of sheer cotton batiste the width of the skirt and about 2 inches shorter, hemmed it \u00c2\u00a0and gathered it with the outer skirt, treating it as one piece as I stitched it to the bodice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/dress-backs1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30688\" alt=\"dress-backs\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/dress-backs1.jpg\" width=\"433\" height=\"650\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/dress-backs1.jpg 433w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/dress-backs1-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 433px) 100vw, 433px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Also I prefer a single layer sash, so I did a rolled hem on the edges of the sashes with my BabyLock Evolution serger.
