Roses or lace?\u00c2\u00a0 Lately, more often than not, I have chosen the garden over the sewing room. Very soon here in Florida it will be too hot to do anything outside but suffer. Now is the time to garden. But still, my sewing room calls.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, so I have done a little sewing on the spa wraps for Laurel&#8217;s spa-tacular 8th birthday party next week.\u00c2\u00a0 But mostly, I have sewn at night. I finished the first wrap in the wee hours this morning.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/spa-wrap-all2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32706\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/spa-wrap-all2.jpg\" alt=\"spa wrap all\" width=\"419\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/spa-wrap-all2.jpg 419w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/spa-wrap-all2-196x300.jpg 196w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 419px) 100vw, 419px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Because there are 9 party guests,\u00c2\u00a0 I still have 8 to make.\u00c2\u00a0 These are not difficult, but the sequence of steps is important.\u00c2\u00a0 Now that I have that figured out, the\u00c2\u00a0 rest should go together fairly quickly. We need to edge the driveway.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The sweet, heavy scent of the Confederate jasmine covers the wrought iron porch rail and climbs up several palm trees.\u00c2\u00a0 Its class=\"wp-caption-text\">The perfume from the jasmine is just heavenly.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bob and I often sit on the porch after dinner and enjoy the scent and the mild spring weather.\u00c2\u00a0 I just planted purple torenia in the little pots on the tables but they aren&#8217;t blooming yet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a in the front did, indeed, knock themselves out at Easter, as seen in this photo with grandchildren Robert and Laurel. \u00c2\u00a0 But today they are nearly flowerless as they quietly grow the next flush of blossoms.\u00c2\u00a0 Now they need rose food, deadheading and more pruning.\u00c2\u00a0 That takes time away from sewing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/RL-Easter1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32707\" 224w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 478px) 100vw, 478px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Our bougainvilleas froze to the ground this winter.\u00c2\u00a0 They required a lot of careful pruning\u00e2\u20ac\u201cthey have vicious 2\u00e2\u20ac\u00b3 thorns\u00e2\u20ac\u201c and training the canes back up against the trellis.\u00c2\u00a0 I doubted they would recover from the freeze, but in just 3 short months this is how it has grown!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32708\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"wp-caption-text\">This bougainvillea is just outside my sewing room window and at one end of the back porch.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I look out at these beauties as I stitch in my sewing class=\"wp-caption-text\">Another frozen bougainvillea at the other end of the back porch.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This one also froze and recovered beautifully.\u00c2\u00a0 Our kitchen table is just inside the window on the left.\u00c2\u00a0 So we look out at these when we are eating.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32710\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption id=\"caption-attachment-32710\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tausendschon climbing rose<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I love antique roses like this climbing Tausendschon.\u00c2\u00a0 They are disease resistant just plain tough.\u00c2\u00a0 There was a row of trellis above the garage fascia board for the rose to grip. But just before the rose came into full bloom, a powerful, windy storm blew it and the trellis off the roof.\u00c2\u00a0 It bent all the way down to the ground so I was afraid the canes would break before we got it back in place.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32712\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/garage-roseno-hose1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32712\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-32712 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/garage-roseno-hose1.jpg\" alt=\"garage rose side\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/garage-roseno-hose1.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/garage-roseno-hose1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32712\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A birds&#8217; nest is tucked in the canes, just under the overhang.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bob used the loader on his tractor to lift the canes up while I pulled ropes.\u00c2\u00a0 Then he climbed on the roof and tied to big screws he put up there. It was a little peaked looking for a day or so, but then it was just fine. But a lot of buds were lost in the collapse.<\/p>\n<p>About two weeks after we got the climbing rose tied back up, I reached up to cut a few sprigs for use in the house.\u00c2\u00a0 A furious mama bird flew out of her nest and squawked at me from the Surinam cherry hedge nearby.\u00c2\u00a0 Didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t she pick a lovely spot for her home?<\/p>\n<p>In the bed below the rose there are\/were poinsettias.\u00c2\u00a0 I just pruned them and have the cuttings potted in the shed.\u00c2\u00a0 They will grow back quickly, but it surely is a barren and ugly bed now.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32713\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/potting-shed1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32713\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32713\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/potting-shed1.jpg\" alt=\"Bob built this for me many years ago. The one on the left is coming back, but it is spindly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/side-yard-swing1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32717\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/side-yard-swing1.jpg\" alt=\"side yard swing\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/side-yard-swing1.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/side-yard-swing1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve still got to plant the pots on the tables with white impatiens and plant some around the oak tree behind the chairs.\u00c2\u00a0 The children loved to swing here but the seat is too short and their legs are too long.\u00c2\u00a0 Bob has to shorten the ropes.<\/p>\n<p>Usually, the planters on the walkway between the garage and the wash house are filled with coleus.\u00c2\u00a0 But this year the garden shops didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have the colors I wanted so I am trying caladiums.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/caladiums1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32718\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/caladiums1.jpg\" alt=\"caladiums\" width=\"368\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/caladiums1.jpg 368w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/caladiums1-172x300.jpg 172w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>They were leggy when I planted them, but the new growth is standing up nicely.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/orchids-21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32719\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/orchids-21.jpg\" alt=\"orchids 2\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/orchids-21.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/orchids-21-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My daughter gave me this orchid almost 5 years ago and it has never bloomed.\u00c2\u00a0 Suddenly, this spring, it sprouted four flower shoots, from 3-5\u00e2\u20ac\u00b2 long!\u00c2\u00a0 The tiny yellow orchids are just gorgeous.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/orchids-22.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32720\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/orchids-22.jpg\" alt=\"orchids 2\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/orchids-22.jpg 600w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/orchids-22-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The next time we have guests, I am going to put it in a more prominent place, where it can be seen more easily.<\/p>\n<p>Then there are the gloriosa lilies and white bleeding hearts, passion vine\u00c2\u00a0 and so much more.\u00c2\u00a0 But I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m sure you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve had more than your fill and are ready to get off this cyber tour bus.<\/p>\n<p>This post is an effort to explain why the blog posts have been behind schedule.\u00c2\u00a0 My spade will soon be put down and the needle will be picked up. \u00c2\u00a0 Then I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll be holed up in the sewing room for the summer, just like a bear hibernates in the winter.<\/p>\n<p>I hope you are having a beautiful spring in your area.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Each day I struggle with this decision.\u00c2\u00a0 Gloriosa lilies or Swiss batiste?\u00c2\u00a0 Weeding or smocking?
