There were patterns for fagoted bibs, bonnets, round yoke dresses, collars and more.<\/p>\n<p>Fagoting, or &#8220;bridging&#8221; as it is now sometimes known, \u00c2\u00a0is the joining of lace to lace, lace to ribbon, or the joining of any two finished edges with any one of several handwork stitches. By enlarging the above photo, you will see that several different stitches have been used to join the pieces.\u00c2\u00a0 To maintain an equal distance between the two edges, the pieces are hand basted to a paper pattern with lines defining the space to be filled with the stitches.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/zbonnetfagotpatt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32382\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/zbonnetfagotpatt.jpg\" alt=\"zbonnetfagotpatt\" width=\"534\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/zbonnetfagotpatt.jpg 534w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/zbonnetfagotpatt-250x300.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 534px) 100vw, 534px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>After taking a class from Kitty, I was intrigued with fagoting and intended to fill my grandmother\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hope chest with a multitude of fagoted items. After our home sustained major damage from Hurricane Charley in 2004, this bonnet is the only surviving item of the few I did complete.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/zbonnetfagotback.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32383\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/zbonnetfagotback.jpg\" alt=\"zbonnetfagotback\" width=\"640\" height=\"631\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/zbonnetfagotback.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/zbonnetfagotback-300x295.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As the joined pieces are held only by decorative handwork stitches, the item is potentially fragile. Often, bias tubing is used for the pieces to be joined (see photo below) and stitching done in heavier thread makes these items more durable.\u00c2\u00a0 The back of this horseshoe bonnet is self lined and\u00c2\u00a0turned\u00c2\u00a0with the raw bottom edge caught in the seam of the bottom binding.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/zbonnetfagotdressPR.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32384\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/zbonnetfagotdressPR.jpg\" alt=\"zbonnetfagotdressPR\" width=\"456\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/zbonnetfagotdressPR.jpg 456w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/zbonnetfagotdressPR-213x300.jpg 213w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last fall when I taught in Puerto Rico, I was delighted to see this beautiful two year old wearing a fagoted yoke dress.
