But I am very disappointed in the results.\u00c2\u00a0 I hope one of you may have a suggestion to elevate this potentially beautiful set from &#8220;oh dear!&#8221; to &#8220;acceptable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/corner-cross2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32165\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/corner-cross2.jpg\" alt=\"corner cross\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/corner-cross2.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/corner-cross2-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let me give you the background.\u00c2\u00a0 A few years ago, I helped my Aunt Rheeta make a spectacular set for her church, using fine linen, this same liturgical lace, and the same design set.\u00c2\u00a0 The pictures are not good at all, but you can see hers by clicking <a title=\"Aunt Rheeta\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Communion Cloth\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2010\/04\/10\/aunt-rheetas-communion-cloth\/\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, I hoped to create an equally beautiful communion set, worthy of it&#8217;s sacred purpose, for my church.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The worship committee, who decides such things, requested that the fabric be &#8220;easy care.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 Hmmmmm&#8230;I offered to launder the set after every use, but they were insistent that it be easy care.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/radiant-cross-xx.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32172\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/radiant-cross-xx.jpg\" alt=\"radiant cross xx\" width=\"449\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/radiant-cross-xx.jpg 449w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/radiant-cross-xx-210x300.jpg 210w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 449px) 100vw, 449px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>First, I called Sally at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.farmhousefabrics.com\">Farmhouse Fabrics<\/a> to see if she had a good quality 60&#8243; linen blend.\u00c2\u00a0 But she didn&#8217;t.\u00c2\u00a0 After checking around, I reluctantly purchased a few inches of several sample fabrics from our local JoAnn&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>On each of these, I rehearsed the pin stitch and entredeux stitches.\u00c2\u00a0 My best results were on a 51&#8243; wide piece of linen look poly.\u00c2\u00a0 I thought that would work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/crown-tip-cross-xx.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32173\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/crown-tip-cross-xx.jpg\" alt=\"crown tip cross xx\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/crown-tip-cross-xx.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/crown-tip-cross-xx-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Because the cloth required 60&#8243; of width, a piece was sewn on either side of the center panel.\u00c2\u00a0 Entredeux was worked along the seam line, but looks very rough because it was stitched over two thicknesses.\u00c2\u00a0 On real linen, that has always worked beautifully.\u00c2\u00a0 But ultimately, puckers appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Even though everything was flat while the hemstitching (both entredeux and pinstitch) was being worked with Stitch &amp; Ditch stabilizer beneath the heavily starched, flat as a board fabric, after a very short time, it puckered.<\/p>\n<p>Do you have any suggestions for eliminating the pucker?\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m thinking about using a liquid starch and pressing it stiff.\u00c2\u00a0 But it seems that Florida&#8217;s humidity will ultimately overcome the starch.<\/p>\n<p>Another problem is that the back of the lovely embroidery has scratchy dots of melted-but-not-disappeared plastic, even after many hours of picking it off with tweezers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/center-crosses4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32174\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/center-crosses4.jpg\" alt=\"center crosses\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/center-crosses4.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/center-crosses4-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I learned that it is not a good idea to use iron-away stabilizer on a blend.\u00c2\u00a0 If the iron is hot enough to melt the stabilizer, it will scorch the fabric.\u00c2\u00a0 So the back of each embroidery is rough, at least until I have a few extra hours to pick it off.\u00c2\u00a0 Do you have any suggestions for removing these bits?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/ChristianSymbols_Set.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23080\" title=\"ChristianSymbols_Set\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/ChristianSymbols_Set.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"434\" height=\"704\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All of the embroidery designs came from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc-machine-embroidery-designs.com\/Machine_Embroidery_Designs\/Christian_Symbols_Designs.html\"><em>Christian Symbols<\/em><\/a>\u00c2\u00a0 collection from ABC Embroidery Designs is absolutely gorgeous. And it is on sale now for $15, regularly $47! \u00c2\u00a0 The thread I&#8217;ve used is a favorite of mine, Robison-Anton&#8217;s 100% cotton 50 wt. thread.\u00c2\u00a0 I first used it to <a title=\"Monogrammed Linen Napkins for White Wednesday\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2009\/11\/27\/monogrammed-linen-napkins\/\">monogram linen napkins<\/a> and fell in love with the texture it gives.<\/p>\n<p>When it came time to make the veil to cover the bread, I just went with quality 100% linen.\u00c2\u00a0 I am satisfied with the 22&#8243; hemstitched square with mitred corners to match the cloth.\u00c2\u00a0 It lies perfectly flat and the washaway stabilizer left not a trace.\u00c2\u00a0 It is embroidered in the center with a design of grapes and wheat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/veil-center2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32175\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/veil-center2.jpg\" alt=\"veil center\" width=\"640\" height=\"636\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/veil-center2.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/veil-center2-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/veil-center2-300x298.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m wrestling with whether or not to present this to the committee.\u00c2\u00a0 Later this summer I could start another with good linen if they allow it.\u00c2\u00a0 But sadly, I&#8217;ve used up all the liturgical lace on this project.\u00c2\u00a0 If I had more, I would just start over.\u00c2\u00a0 But this was a once in a lifetime purchase from Farmhouse Fabrics.<\/p>\n<p>Any suggestions would be appreciated.\u00c2\u00a0 I should probably just follow the advice of the sage contemporary philosopher, Mary Engelbreit.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"pinImage\" style=\"height: 657px; width: 500px; margin: 0 auto; padding: 40px 0px;\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com\/736x\/8f\/a1\/46\/8fa14629d33669a5af1bca3248b16159.jpg\" alt=\"Mary Engelbreit\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; I&#8217;ve just finished a two-piece set of communion linens to replace the plain white household tablecloth and napkin that has been in use at our church for some time.
