This estate sale was more fun than when the circus comes to town.\u00c2\u00a0 Actually, I&#8217;m not a fan of circuses, but you know what I mean.\u00c2\u00a0 Being in that house was like stepping into a 1925 time capsule and bringing whatever I wanted back home to 2012! \u00c2\u00a0 And I wanted a lot&#8230;..\u00c2\u00a0 But for budgetary limitations, I&#8217;d have just bought the farm.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23268\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/xst-naps1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23268\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-23268\" title=\"xst naps\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/xst-naps1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/xst-naps1.jpg 1280w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/xst-naps1-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/xst-naps1-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-23268\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The set has 4 matching napkins.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Several of my friends wanted in on the fun, so we made it a girlfriend field\u00c2\u00a0 trip.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 We caravaned into the quiet neighborhood, each shopper in her own vehicle, so that we had plenty of cargo space to carry home our booty.<\/p>\n<p>I had been to the house earlier in the week to help\u00c2\u00a0 evaluate the textiles for my friend who was running the sale.\u00c2\u00a0 I should have left a trail of bread crumbs.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The old 1920&#8217;s neighborhood is a maze of angled roads with dead ends and roads just one block long, like the street where the sale was located.\u00c2\u00a0 But I tried to take a short cut&#8212;big mistake&#8212; and instead spent nearly 15 minutes and probably a few gallons of gas snaking through the road maze.<\/p>\n<p>I am surprised that no resident called the sheriff to investigate suspicious activity.\u00c2\u00a0 There we were, 6 giddy women in 6 cars in a congo line driving up one block and then another and then turning around&#8212;now that was fun on a narrow street with 6 cars!\u00c2\u00a0 Periodically, I stopped and ran car to car offering apologies and encouragement to keep the faith. Finally we found the sale and got serious about our shopping.<\/p>\n<p>So here are some of my great finds.<\/p>\n<p>I love the cross stitch tablecloth and napkins in the photos above.\u00c2\u00a0 The next time a sewing pal visits, I&#8217;ll set the table in the <a title=\"Sewing Friends\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2011\/02\/18\/sewing-friends\/\">potting shed<\/a> with this and we&#8217;ll have lunch.\u00c2\u00a0 Won&#8217;t that be pretty?<em>\u00c2\u00a0 Note: call first for a reservation or we&#8217;ll be eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This set is of a genre that I&#8217;ve seen frequently at other sales, but about which I know very little.\u00c2\u00a0 It is featured on the cover of a book on antique textiles, but the text makes no mention of the piece, the style, or the unique finish at the hem.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Tablecloths, napkins, antimacassars, armchair covers, and more, are all done in the same rich color palette and always have the same hem finish.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23266\" style=\"width: 970px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC05331.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23266\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-23266\" title=\"DSC05331\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC05331.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"1280\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC05331.jpg 960w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC05331-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC05331-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-23266\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">antimacassar for chair back and covers for chair arms<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The hem finish is a sort of triangle, sometimes satin stitched and other times a simple short straight stitch.\u00c2\u00a0 Most often, it is worked over a very narrow selvage\u00c2\u00a0 and is quite secure.\u00c2\u00a0 On shaped edges, like the curves on the chair set above,\u00c2\u00a0 the raw edge is pressed up no more than 1\/4&#8243; and clipped, and finally stitched over the fold. \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t hold up very well.<\/p>\n<p>Do you know anything about this kind of cross stitch ?\u00c2\u00a0 A name for the style?\u00c2\u00a0 One site I found called it Arts and Crafts cross stitch and showed nearly identical pieces.\u00c2\u00a0 This <a href=\"http:\/\/southernladysmarket.blogspot.com\/2010\/10\/its-blog-party-for-vintage-linens.html\">site <\/a>also showed the back, which is another match for mine.<\/p>\n<p>But moving on&#8230;..<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23287\" style=\"width: 752px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/org-runner-all2-rot1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23287\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-23287\" title=\"org runner all2 rot\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/org-runner-all2-rot1-e1339730859789.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"742\" height=\"1258\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-23287\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">organdy table runner with handmade lace.\u00c2 \u00c2  Oops. I just noticed that I did not gt all the little lace medallions facing up on the pointed end.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The organdy table runner or dresser scarf is spectacular.\u00c2\u00a0 The lace looks like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.intatters.com\/showthread.php?3582-Teneriffe-Lace-step-by-step&amp;s=cbae1822127f9a16438415cbbd0d6dbb\">teneriffe<\/a> but I&#8217;m not sure. \u00c2\u00a0 But it most certainly is hand made.<em> \u00c2\u00a0 I wish I knew more about <a href=\"http:\/\/lace.lacefairy.com\/Lace\/ID\/TenerifeID.html\">teneriffe<\/a> and other antique textiles.\u00c2\u00a0 I need to read up on the subject.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23275\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/org-runner-prewash-end-1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23275\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23275\" title=\"org runner prewash end 1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/org-runner-prewash-end-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/org-runner-prewash-end-1.jpg 1280w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/org-runner-prewash-end-1-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/org-runner-prewash-end-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-23275\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The fabric and lace were both absolutely gold colored.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It had been stored in a humid Florida attic for 30 years or more.\u00c2\u00a0 It was so discolored that I wondered if there was any hope that it could be whitened.\u00c2\u00a0 Thinking I had nothing to lose, I filled my old standby 2-quart Pyrex measuring cup with warm water and a hefty slug of Clorox 2.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23276\" style=\"width: 963px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/soak-first.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23276\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-23276\" title=\"soak cl2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/soak-first.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"953\" height=\"887\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/soak-first.jpg 953w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/soak-first-300x279.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 953px) 100vw, 953px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-23276\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Notice the water is blue from the Clorox 2.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Just 3 hours later, it had worked its magic.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23277\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/soak-2.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23277\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23277\" title=\"soak 2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/soak-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/soak-2.jpg 1280w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/soak-2-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/soak-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-23277\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Notice how yellow the water is just 3 hours later.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After soaking for another 24 hours and came much cleaner.
