She strives to nurture this trait in her children by example and by regularly offering opportunities for them to interact with senior citizens.<\/p>\n<p>So what does this have to do with sewing?\u00c2\u00a0 Well, it made me think that perhaps I should follow her example and reach out to this fragile age group, giving them a few sewn gifts and a few hours of my time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Of course, it is always a joy to sew for family and friends, especially the children.\u00c2\u00a0 But it wouldn&#8217;t hurt me one little bit to reach a little further and periodically stitch for those at the other end of the age spectrum, especially some forgotten nursing home patients.<\/p>\n<p>Before my sweet Aunt Aileen passed away last year, I found great pleasure in taking her special little presents, like this<a title=\"Keeping her warm as she slips away\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/10\/keeping-her-warm-as-she-slips-away\/\"> lap robe.<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0 She treasured the soft, personalized fleece throw, as well as a satin pillow embroidered with her name,\u00c2\u00a0 made by her sister Rheeta.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It gave me a warm glow every time I thought of her snuggled under that warm blanket. But my gifts and visits were all for her, not for any other residents.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23662\" style=\"width: 809px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Aileen-all2.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23662\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-23662\" title=\"Aileen-all2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Aileen-all2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"799\" height=\"1251\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Aileen-all2.jpg 799w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Aileen-all2-191x300.jpg 191w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Aileen-all2-654x1024.jpg 654w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-23662\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">my Aunt Aileen, 1921-2011<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><!--more-->Betty Ludwig regularly showers her elderly mother with a <a title=\"Betty\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Embroidered Buttons\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/16\/bettys-embroidered-buttons\/\">variety of gifts<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 She\u00c2\u00a0 proudly shows off her latest treasures to the other nursing home residents and glows with happiness.\u00c2\u00a0 Betty said that her mother is thrilled with any little gift, not just big ones.\u00c2\u00a0 So it is easy to please her with an embroidered refrigerator magnet or a paperclip book mark.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23665\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Bettysbuttonspaperclips.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23665\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23665\" title=\"Bettysbuttonspaperclips\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Bettysbuttonspaperclips.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Bettysbuttonspaperclips.jpg 630w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Bettysbuttonspaperclips-300x203.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-23665\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Betty&#8217;s book marks with embroidered button covers<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Maybe because I am approaching the &#8220;elderly&#8221; category, I feel especially moved and motivated by Shelly&#8217;s efforts.\u00c2\u00a0 I plan to sew gifts for some of Aunt Aileen&#8217;s contemporaries, especially lap robes, as the residents always seem to be cold.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But more important than gifts, I think, is spending time and recognizing society&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0 senior citizens as\u00c2\u00a0 individuals.\u00c2\u00a0 She is not just one member of a homogenous group, like a single sheep is one of many nearly identical creature in the flock.\u00c2\u00a0 Each elderly individual is a real, unique person with real stories and a full life behind him.\u00c2\u00a0 Sometimes she may want to tell someone her story and about the full life she has led.\u00c2\u00a0 Sometimes, he just needs someone to be there, quietly acknowledging his worth.<\/p>\n<p>At\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/sewconsult-ponderings.blogspot.com\/2012\/07\/yesterday.html\">Ponderings of Life<\/a>,\u00c2\u00a0 Beckie wrote a beautifully poignant post about a quiet, nearly silent visit with her mother at her nursing home.\u00c2\u00a0 That post and the Youtube video posted by my compassionate daughter-in-law on her Facebook page, have motivated me to commit more time and energy to helping\/visiting\/acknowledging the elderly people in my community and my life.
