So many have lost absolutely all of their worldly possessions, and even worse, many have lost loved ones. At times like this, neighbors pitch in to help.\u00c2\u00a0 But Sandy&#8217;s swath of destruction is so wide that neighbors able to lend a helping hand are very far from the center of the damage.\u00c2\u00a0 It will be a long time until any semblance of normal is restored.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24766\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Charlie-damage.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24766\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-24766\" title=\"Charlie damage\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Charlie-damage.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Charlie-damage.jpg 1280w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Charlie-damage-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Charlie-damage-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-24766\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The guest room, quite unfit for guests.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In 2004, our home was badly damaged by Hurricane Charlie.\u00c2\u00a0 We were without power for almost a week in August, a brutally hot month in Florida.\u00c2\u00a0 We were miserable.\u00c2\u00a0 The suffering of Sandy&#8217;s victims is exacerbated by the bitter cold weather.\u00c2\u00a0 I encourage all readers to do what they can to help, through the Red Cross, Salvation Army and other crisis management organizations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/sweet-all.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24743\" title=\"sweet all\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/sweet-all.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"939\" height=\"1100\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/sweet-all.jpg 939w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/sweet-all-256x300.jpg 256w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/sweet-all-874x1024.jpg 874w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 939px) 100vw, 939px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On a more cheerful note, in the midst of my own personal (but comparatively minimal) bronchial misery, I have started this daygown for our Christmas\/New Years girl grandbaby.\u00c2\u00a0 So far as I&#8217;m concerned, forget about the <em>Robitussin <\/em>and<em> Contact Cold +Flu Caplets<\/em>!\u00c2\u00a0 Smocking is my best medicinal comfort.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 It took a while to rally the energy to prepare this project for smocking but I couldn&#8217;t be more pleased with the work-in-progress results.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/yoke-crop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24760\" title=\"yoke crop\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/yoke-crop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/yoke-crop.jpg 1280w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/yoke-crop-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/yoke-crop-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The very best thing about the pink confection daygown is the sweet, sweet fabric, <a href=\"http:\/\/store.marthapullen.com\/p-4946-stripe-dotted-swiss\">striped dotted <\/a>Swiss from Martha Pullen&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marthapullen.com\/\">on-line store<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This 62&#8243; 100% cotton Swiss fabric comes in pink, blue, yellow, white and aqua.\u00c2\u00a0 Now, striped dotted Swiss ranks up there at the top of my favorite fabrics list, along with my beloved Liberty of London tana lawn.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/sweet-fabric.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24754\" title=\"sweet fabric\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/sweet-fabric.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/sweet-fabric.jpg 1280w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/sweet-fabric-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/sweet-fabric-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Life goes on, regardless of what ails us.\u00c2\u00a0 This past week has been a blur of activity with preparations for the county fair.\u00c2\u00a0 Robert, 7, and Laurel, 8, are highly motivated by the lure of cash and ribbons, both of which are distributed generously at our fair.\u00c2\u00a0 Laurel was a big winner<a title=\"Winners!\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/08\/winners\/\"> last year<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Robert had a few entries but got a wake-up call when he saw his sister&#8217;s big payout. \u00c2\u00a0 This year, he was ready to take on the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>We were so rushed that the projects and baking were finished on the day the entries were due at the fair&#8217;s check in locations.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 There was no time for pictures.\u00c2\u00a0 I look forward to sharing with you the photos of the fruits of their labors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>STROLLING DOWN MEMORY LANE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The wad of white embroidery floss in the first photo triggered my memory of a shopping day 30 years ago.\u00c2\u00a0 Our pre-WalMart local discount store, Roses, had a special sale, offering DMC floss for $ .20 per skein.\u00c2\u00a0 I loaded 3 year old Rebecca and her friend Graham into the cart and began picking my discounted prizes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8796\" style=\"width: 1475px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DIYsmocked-girls.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8796\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-8796 \" title=\"DIYsmocked girls\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DIYsmocked-girls.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1465\" height=\"925\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DIYsmocked-girls.jpg 1465w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DIYsmocked-girls-300x189.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DIYsmocked-girls-1024x646.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1465px) 100vw, 1465px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8796\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rebecca (L) and Graham (R), partners in &#8220;helpful&#8221; crime.\u00c2\u00a0 The photo is a digital version of a 31 year old slide, obviously deteriorating.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At that time, Graham&#8217;s mother and I had a homebased custom order smocking business, so I was shopping for Mary as well as myself.\u00c2\u00a0 More than 150 skeins of floss had been placed in the basket when a friend came down the aisle.<\/p>\n<p>We chatted about this and that for some time, then I headed to the cashier to check out.\u00c2\u00a0 Imagine my shock when the little girls smiled at me, proudly offering me fists full of their &#8220;help.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 They had removed all the identifying number wrappers around the floss!<\/p>\n<p>Some of that embroidery thread was used, but much of it ended up in the 4 year-old&#8217;s witness protection program, stuffed into a large zip lock bag in a drawer.\u00c2\u00a0 I plundered through the bag for a specific color only when I was certain that a single skein would suffice, as I could never be sure of an identical match.<\/p>\n<p>Today, all these years later, I still have that tangled mass of floss that periodically I try to use.<\/p>\n<p>Now I can smile about it.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Then?\u00c2\u00a0 Not so much.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My concern and prayers are offered\u00c2\u00a0 for all who suffer in the path of destruction left by Hurricane Sandy.
