Since we began last week, she can hardly wait for reading and math to be finished so she can sew. Initially, I insisted that the entire day\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s academic work be completed before we brought out the\u00c2\u00a0 machine.<\/p>\n<p>But she was so\u00c2\u00a0antsy\u00c2\u00a0that we were not accomplishing as much as we had before\u00c2\u00a0she was\u00c2\u00a0introduced to her new best friend, her favorite little Brother.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0So now, after the first two subjects of the day,\u00c2\u00a0 she gets to sew and then the remaining academic\u00c2\u00a0assignments are\u00c2\u00a0tackled without complaint.<\/p>\n<p>Her first project is a set of polar fleece puppets for a show her mother is arranging.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0I have embroidered the faces and hands and\u00c2\u00a0Laurel is doing the construction of three pigs and\u00c2\u00a0a \u00c2\u00a0farmer who make up the cast.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 The audience will be\u00c2\u00a0a small group of homeschoolers. The story, <em>Pigs in a Rig<\/em> from Laurel\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s first grade reader, is entertaining and brief enough for the 4-6 year old audience.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/homeschoolsewingpigs1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13354\" title=\"homeschoolsewingpigs\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/homeschoolsewingpigs1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"554\" height=\"915\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The value estimate runs something like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>time to edit designs and embroider 4 two-sided puppets (by Nana)&#8212;4 hours<\/li>\n<li>time spent sewing 4 puppets (by Laurel)&#8212;40 minutes<\/li>\n<li>time spent constructing props and puppet theater as well as\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0supervising show rehearsal (by Laurel\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s mother) &#8211;3-4 hours<\/li>\n<li>time for puppet show, start to finish&#8211;4 minutes<\/li>\n<li>cost of live, off-Broadway theatrical experience and budding enthusiasm for sewing&#8211;PRICELESS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more-->The puppets are from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emblibrary.com\">Embroidery Library,<\/a> one of my favorite sites.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<em>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 A Puppets Design Pack, Child Size <\/em>has 8 designs,\u00c2\u00a0 all with hands or paws or hooves, including \u00c2\u00a0a girl, girl in red scarf who can pass\u00c2\u00a0for Little Red Riding Hood, boy, cat, dog, pig, wolf, and a wolf in grandma clothes. To match the characters in the story, I\u00c2\u00a0used\u00c2\u00a0BuzzEdit to add\u00c2\u00a0a bow tie, a hair bow and a pair of glasses to the pigs.\u00c2\u00a0 For the farmer, not yet stitched, \u00c2\u00a0I added a hat and appliqu\u00c3\u00a9d clothing.<\/p>\n<p>For many years, when my daughter Rebecca was little, I taught children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s sewing classes. If only we had had machines like the Brother 300S that is now Laurel\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s!\u00c2\u00a0 Success is almost guaranteed.\u00c2\u00a0 The most recent model of that mini machine is\u00c2\u00a0 Brother&#8217;s \u00c2\u00a0SE350, priced at about $400. It is a sewing\/embroidery combo machine with a 4&#215;4&#8243; embroidery field.<\/p>\n<p>The feature that is most useful right now for Laurel is the speed control which allows her to stitch at the rate of a snail. Another nice feature for a junior sewist is the warning beep\u00c2\u00a0which alerts the operator that the presser foot is not down.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u00c2\u00a0will not allow sewing to begin until this oversight is corrected.\u00c2\u00a0 The machine\u00c2\u00a0is a tiny little thing, weighing about 11 pounds, and is so proportional for a youngster.<\/p>\n<p>I think every woman who sews wants her daughters and granddaughters to share her\u00c2\u00a0love of sewing.\u00c2\u00a0 I think Laurel is off to a good start.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Five year old Laurel declares that she LOVES sewing!
