\u00c2\u00a0 There was an office party for the children and he loved it.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>His mother had to hide it after they returned home so that it would still be wearable by Halloween.\u00c2\u00a0 And it was.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/IMG_4991.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24855\" title=\"IMG_4991\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/IMG_4991.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1195\" height=\"1600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/IMG_4991.jpg 1195w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/IMG_4991-224x300.jpg 224w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/IMG_4991-764x1024.jpg 764w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1195px) 100vw, 1195px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->My daughter-in-law, Shelly, is very practical.\u00c2\u00a0 For their homeschool team&#8217;s <a title=\"Odyssey Competition\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/12\/odyssey-competition\/\">Odyssey of the Mind<\/a> skit this year, Laurel, 8, will be a Space Age Dorothy in a <em>Wizard of the Oz<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0 adaptation.\u00c2\u00a0 Shelly found this Dorothy costume for Halloween and and after that it will be jazzed up with lame&#8217; and hot glue gems to fit their skit for the Odyssey competition<\/p>\n<p>Seven year-old Robert, as usual, wanted to be scary.\u00c2\u00a0 I can&#8217;t even recall the name of his character, but if you ask any 6-10 year old boy, I&#8217;m sure he could tell you.\u00c2\u00a0 The big blue eyes peeking out from the awesome hood is the only evidence that this is, indeed, my sweet yellow-haired boy.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, my favorites Halloween costumes are always Mom-made and\u00c2\u00a0 that&#8217;s what Jo&#8217;s children wore.\u00c2\u00a0 Each year, she comes up with a theme that includes all of her children.\u00c2\u00a0 This year, they were gingerbread cookies, an oven and the baker.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Boo_Zoo_5_Before_-_Low_Res.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24852\" title=\"Boo_Zoo_5_Before_-_Low_Res\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Boo_Zoo_5_Before_-_Low_Res.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3216\" height=\"2136\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Boo_Zoo_5_Before_-_Low_Res.jpg 3216w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Boo_Zoo_5_Before_-_Low_Res-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Boo_Zoo_5_Before_-_Low_Res-1024x680.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 3216px) 100vw, 3216px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For the\u00c2\u00a0 three gingerbread kids, she used ginger colored corduroy and jumbo rick rack.\u00c2\u00a0 I especially like the way she created contrast in the littlest cookie&#8217;s outfit.\u00c2\u00a0 She used the wrong side of the fabric for the yoke on his tunic.\u00c2\u00a0 The peppermint candy buttons just add to the sweetness of these costumes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Gingerbread_x1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24853\" title=\"Gingerbread_x1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Gingerbread_x1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1964\" height=\"2946\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Gingerbread_x1.jpg 1964w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Gingerbread_x1-200x300.jpg 200w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Gingerbread_x1-682x1024.jpg 682w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1964px) 100vw, 1964px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last year the little guy was too small for trick or treating, so she had the older four costumed as<a title=\"Tooo Cute!\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/06\/tooo-cute\/\"> Little\u00c2\u00a0 Red RidingHood<\/a> characters.\u00c2\u00a0 Just adorable.\u00c2\u00a0 Jo does all this, homeschools all the children, <a title=\"Smocked Sunshine\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2011\/07\/31\/smocked-sunshine\/\">smocks<\/a> and <a title=\"Contemporary Cute~Knot Dress\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2012\/08\/08\/contemporary-cuteknot-dress\/\">sews clothes for the children<\/a> and the girls&#8217; dolls.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/jj3_Dolls_-_low_res.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24858\" title=\"jj3_Dolls_-_low_res\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/jj3_Dolls_-_low_res.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2893\" height=\"1929\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/jj3_Dolls_-_low_res.jpg 2893w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/jj3_Dolls_-_low_res-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/jj3_Dolls_-_low_res-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2893px) 100vw, 2893px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>She also teaches sewing to her older daughter and a neighbor girl.\u00c2\u00a0 How amazing is she?\u00c2\u00a0 It makes me tired to even write about all the energy she has.<\/p>\n<p>This is old news to readers who have followed this blog for a while, but I thought it bore repeating, in view of the topic <em>costumes<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>I thought tonight about one of the most unusual costumes I have ever made.\u00c2\u00a0 My friend Linda, a nurse, wanted to go to a Halloween party dressed as a cataract with\u00c2\u00a0her husband,\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0a very prominent opthamologist.\u00c2\u00a0 He would\u00c2\u00a0suit up as\u00c2\u00a0a laser beam.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Only friendship could move me to tackle\u00c2\u00a0 this project.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A hula hoop was covered with shiny fabric, selected by Linda because it was precisely the color of a &#8220;ripe&#8221; cataract.\u00c2\u00a0 It was lightly stuffed to represent the curvature of the pupil.\u00c2\u00a0 On the\u00c2\u00a0fabric\u00c2\u00a0I embroidered bits of corny text in small letters, simulating laser cuts.\u00c2\u00a0 Phrases like &#8220;Can&#8217;t see?\u00c2\u00a0 Call me!&#8221; followed by the name of the surgery center or &#8220;Need a fix for your vision?\u00c2\u00a0 Al&#8217;s your physician!&#8217; Linda wore black\u00c2\u00a0pants and\u00c2\u00a0shirt with her head stuck through a hole at the top of the hoop.\u00c2\u00a0 Linda and Al were the hit of the party, though she said she had a hard time eating and dancing with that cataract hanging around her neck.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>All\u00c2\u00a0 this is to say that Halloween was fun, fun, fun here in Florida and all over the country I am sure.<\/p>\n<p>Did you make any costumes this year?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Halloween has never been my favorite holiday, but I must admit I have warmed up to it since our grandchildren joined in the festivities.\u00c2\u00a0 Both of my children have October birthdays and each had at least two parties every year &hellip;
