Peter’s message reads, “Donut miss church. Muffin but good things happen there.”<\/p><\/div>\n

Bob and I had so much fun with Peter, our Elf on the Shelf, and our two older grandchildren.\u00c2\u00a0 Because we grandparents were sick,\u00c2\u00a0 we missed Christmas church and family gatherings.\u00c2\u00a0 So we were especially grateful to have shared these magical elf encounters with Robert and Laurel on their overnights with us.<\/p>\n

This visitation came on a Sunday morning.\u00c2\u00a0 Saturday night, Robert had complained that he didn’t want to go to church. \u00c2\u00a0 He was tired and didn’t feel well and wanted us to stay home.\u00c2\u00a0 That is not an option at Nana’s house.<\/p>\n

When the children came downstairs for breakfast, there sat Peter, perched on the napkin box, with an elf-sized donut in his hand and a box of elf goodies at his feet.\u00c2\u00a0 There were Krispy Creme donuts, blueberry and zucchini muffins for non-elves.<\/p>\n

Peter’s message reads, “Donut miss church.\u00c2\u00a0 Muffin but good\u00c2\u00a0 things happen there.\u00c2\u00a0 Peter.”\u00c2\u00a0<\/em> The children are just the right age (7 and 8) to appreciate this corny, juvenile humor.\u00c2\u00a0 They loved it.<\/p>\n

Elf donuts with a restorative sprinkle of cinnamon.<\/p><\/div>\n

Fascinated with the miniature donuts, Robert reached out and briefly brushed Peter’s arm.\u00c2\u00a0 That is a HUGE elf no-no.\u00c2\u00a0 It is said\u00c2\u00a0 that elves lose their magic if they are touched by human hands.<\/p>\n

Having paid close attention to the first aid recommendation in the elf book that Peter left, Laurel rushed to the cupboard and pulled out some cinnamon\/sugar mix to restore the elf’s magic.\u00c2\u00a0 She reassured Robert that all was well now and not to worry. \u00c2\u00a0 Under her breath she muttered “Clooooose call!”<\/p>\n

Bob recently wrote about our grandchildren:<\/p>\n

They must be angels<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Sent to rescue us<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

From old age<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

and irrelevance.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Isn’t that beautiful?<\/p>\n

So now until next year it’s goodbye to Peter and the wonder he inspires.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Godspeed, sweet elf.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
