It&#8217;s a pretty spot to sit&#8212;or hang a dress.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Have you ever had a project that made you wonder if you would ever finish it?\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s the story for this summer dress that I started in June.\u00c2\u00a0 Finally today,\u00c2\u00a0 Sept. 2, it is ready to wear.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, it&#8217;s a little late for summer, but in central Florida, summer lasts until late Oct.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 There are still plenty of 90 degree days ahead for Laurel, my 9 year old granddaughter, to wear this cotton sundress.\u00c2\u00a0 Add\u00c2\u00a0 to that the fact that it is a little big, so she will be cool and cute next summer.<\/p>\n<p>The pattern is <em>Summer Separates<\/em> from the Sew Beautiful collection.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/summer-separates.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23203\" alt=\"summer separates\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/summer-separates.jpg\" width=\"1280\" height=\"1691\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/summer-separates.jpg 1280w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/summer-separates-227x300.jpg 227w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/summer-separates-775x1024.jpg 775w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This is a great pattern, <a title=\"New Sundress, NewTechniques\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2012\/06\/09\/new-sundress-newtechniques\/\">one I&#8217;ve made before<\/a> with Swiss pique and Liberty of London tanna lawn.\u00c2\u00a0 This second version was inspired by the fabulous Easter sundresses Judy Day made for her granddaughters.\u00c2\u00a0 Take a look<a title=\"Easter Outfits by Judy Day~~Going with the Flow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2013\/04\/30\/easter-outfits-by-judy-daygoing-with-the-flow\/\"> at them<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 I loved that fabric and bought some for Laurel. \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 The bodice is Swiss pique and the trims are\u00c2\u00a0 gingham and a quilting cotton, all from my stash.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/bodice.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27813\" alt=\"bodice\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/bodice.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/bodice.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/bodice-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The monogram is from Embroidery Art&#8217;s <del> Arabesque Monogram Set 8<\/del> Royal Monogram Set.<\/p>\n<p>I added hot pink topstitching to the green gingham using the triple straight stitch and my edgestitch foot.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/strap.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27804\" alt=\"strap\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/strap.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/strap.jpg 600w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/strap-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I think the contrasting hem really finishes this dress nicely.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/hem2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27805\" alt=\"hem\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/hem2.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/hem2.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/hem2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I simplified the construction of the contrasting hem like this.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27798\" style=\"width: 1501px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/hem-scan-1-e1378172038685.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27798\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27798\" alt=\"1. Black thread is used on this sample for visibility, but hot pink thread was used on the dress skirt.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>So why did it take me almost 3 months to finish this dress?\u00c2\u00a0 First, I prewashed the fabric in my relatively new, wonderful washing machine.\u00c2\u00a0 When I took it out, it was chewed up for about 12&#8243; along the center fold and then again for 6-8&#8243; a few inches in from the selvage.\u00c2\u00a0 I can&#8217;t imagine what happened, as there was nothing in the tub but 4 yds. fabric.<\/p>\n<p>Then I realized that I could not use the pattern I had planned for this and started looking for <em>Summer Separates<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 Apparently it was <em>separated<\/em> from the pattern box where it belonged and it took more than a week of my scarce free time to locate it.<\/p>\n<p>Laying out the pattern pieces took a lot of creative rearranging and pattern modification to squeeze out the skirt.\u00c2\u00a0 In fact, the back skirt is 4&#8243; narrower than called for.<\/p>\n<p>And then there is life in general, all good but making it hard to fit sewing into the agenda.<\/p>\n<p>But now it&#8217;s done and I look forward to seeing Laurel wear it during our hot Florida fall.<\/p>\n<p>So what are you all sewing?<\/p>\n<p>P.S.\u00c2\u00a0 This dress, the bodice especially, needed a good press before being photographed.\u00c2\u00a0 But the thunder was rolling and time was running out to get the pictures before the rain came.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Have you ever had a project that made you wonder if you would ever finish it?\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s the story for this summer dress that I started in June.\u00c2\u00a0 Finally today,\u00c2\u00a0 Sept. 2, it is ready to wear.
