{"id":33853,"date":"2015-03-30T02:27:12","date_gmt":"2015-03-30T06:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/?p=33853"},"modified":"2015-04-09T21:40:56","modified_gmt":"2015-04-10T01:40:56","slug":"backpack-and-dingle-dangles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2015\/03\/30\/backpack-and-dingle-dangles\/","title":{"rendered":"Backpack and Dingle Dangles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/backpack.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33854\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/backpack.jpg\" alt=\"backpack\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/backpack.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/backpack-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lately, I&#8217;ve been on a Disney roll embroidering items for a good friend. \u00c2\u00a0 This backpack was a fearsome task, making me wonder if it was a mistake to take it on. \u00c2\u00a0 It brought to mind my<a title=\"Rheeta\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Visit ~Sweat Shop or Working Vacation?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2014\/04\/08\/rheetas-visit-sweat-shop-or-working-vacation\/\"> &#8220;sewing in a cave&#8221;<\/a> experience monogramming a large tote bag.\u00c2\u00a0 I did NOT want to repeat that.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/bag-cave.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33856\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/bag-cave.jpg\" alt=\"bag cave\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/bag-cave.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/bag-cave-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The bag was a Christmas gift for grandson Alastair&#8217;s favorite pre-school teacher.\u00c2\u00a0 Then I tackled another one for my dear Aunt Rheeta.\u00c2\u00a0 But it was no fun at all!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/RCB-emb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33866\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/RCB-emb.jpg\" alt=\"RCB emb\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/RCB-emb.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/RCB-emb-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But embroidering this backpack was a very different experience.\u00c2\u00a0 My Brother Quattro has an &#8220;applique&#8221; feature that made this sort of undertaking much more manageable. And it seems with some effort, it could be done on other embroidery machines.<\/p>\n<p>The Disney gang was embroidered on white denim and and outlined with a straight stitch about 1\/4&#8243; away from the outer design edges.\u00c2\u00a0 That piece was removed from the hoop and trimmed to just a few threads outside the straight\u00c2\u00a0 stitch outline.<\/p>\n<p>Next, the backpack was turned inside out.\u00c2\u00a0 The zippered pocket flap was basted to hooped stabilizer.\u00c2\u00a0 The outline was repeated on that piece.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/pack-close.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33858\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/pack-close.jpg\" alt=\"pack close\" width=\"640\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/pack-close.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/pack-close-300x264.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With a glue stick, the embroidered piece was then applied to the backpack, matching outlines.\u00c2\u00a0 It was like a child&#8217;s cut and paste activity book,\u00c2\u00a0 matching up the outlines.\u00c2\u00a0 Then the satin stitch joined the two pieces and covered the raw edge of the white denim.<\/p>\n<p>Voila!\u00c2\u00a0 Sooo much easier than working in a bag &#8220;cave&#8221; and stitching all the embroidery directly onto the backpack.<\/p>\n<p>So what about the dingle dangles? Here they are.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33859\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/keychains1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33859\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-33859 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/keychains1.jpg\" alt=\"keychains\" width=\"590\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/keychains1.jpg 590w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/keychains1-277x300.jpg 277w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-33859\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Each character hangs from its own ribbon. Don&#8217;t let the photo deceive you. I just lined them up with the lower character ribbons behind the uppers so all that ribbon wasn&#8217;t cluttering up the pic.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I have it on\u00c2\u00a0 good authority that kids like to hang something like keychains from the straps of their backpacks.\u00c2\u00a0 Of course, those dingle dangles\/keychains reflect the student&#8217;s interest, thus the Disney characters for this child.<\/p>\n<p>These were made using that same applique feature on my Quattro that was used on the backpack.\u00c2\u00a0 The only difference is that these are free-standing.<\/p>\n<p>The embroidery was done on stiff craft felt to give them some rigidity.\u00c2\u00a0 For backing color matched cotton was used.\u00c2\u00a0 What a fun project!\u00c2\u00a0 I might even try those <a title=\"Only for the Love of Grandchildren\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2015\/03\/14\/only-for-love-of-grandchildren\/\">Pokemon designs <\/a>on dingle dangles for kindergarten grandson Alastair to hang from his backpack.<\/p>\n<p>There were lots of other Disney projects that I will detail later.\u00c2\u00a0 Finally, they have all been handed off to my friend.\u00c2\u00a0 Whew!\u00c2\u00a0 Now I&#8217;m on to Vivian Rose&#8217;s Easter dress and I&#8217;m loving it.<\/p>\n<p>The dress is made from Wendy Schoen&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heirloomsewingforchildren.com\/p-ws-alice.htm\"><em>Petite Poche Alice<\/em><\/a> pattern, with ultra sheer dusty aqua Swiss batiste.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m loving it.\u00c2\u00a0 More on that later.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/schoen_alice3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33862\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/schoen_alice3.jpg\" alt=\"schoen_alice3\" width=\"300\" height=\"327\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/schoen_alice3.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/schoen_alice3-275x300.jpg 275w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So where are you all with your Easter sewing?
