{"id":34421,"date":"2015-07-03T00:09:38","date_gmt":"2015-07-03T04:09:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/?p=34421"},"modified":"2015-07-03T00:48:37","modified_gmt":"2015-07-03T04:48:37","slug":"quick-tip-thread-nest-and-broken-needles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2015\/07\/03\/quick-tip-thread-nest-and-broken-needles\/","title":{"rendered":"Quick Tip ~ Thread Nest and Broken Needles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Do you keep a knife in your sewing room?\u00c2\u00a0 I do and it&#8217;s not for fear of bad guys bursting into my she-cave.\u00c2\u00a0 This is why.<\/p>\n<p>Picture it, Glenwood, Florida, and me happily embroidering a sweet tee for Baby Girl.\u00c2\u00a0 The machine makes a horrible noise and the needle breaks.\u00c2\u00a0 The hoop cannot be moved and the shirt and its design are in jeopardy.\u00c2\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t happen often, but when it does&#8230;.groannnnn.\u00c2\u00a0 Though it is generally thought to be the result of operator error, I prefer to think it&#8217;s those pesky sewing gremlins.<\/p>\n<p>The situation seems grim.\u00c2\u00a0 How can I save the shirt and release the hoop from the gremlins&#8217; malice?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/1-kife-broken-needle-container.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34423\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/1-kife-broken-needle-container.jpg\" alt=\"1-kife broken needle container\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/1-kife-broken-needle-container.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/1-kife-broken-needle-container-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With that 12&#8243; serrated knife I keep at the ready, that&#8217;s how.\u00c2\u00a0 The blade must be long enough to reach under the hoop all the way to the thread nest.\u00c2\u00a0 It can usually, with care, cut through the threads without damaging the shirt&#8211;or whatever is being embroidered.<\/p>\n<p>After cutting through the thread mess, applying a stabilizer patch over the hole, the broken needle has to be dealt with.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s not a good idea to throw it into my wastebasket where it can stick me when I take out the trash.\u00c2\u00a0 So at each machine I keep a container like this empty sugar-free gum bin into which I discard broken, dull or bent needles.\u00c2\u00a0 Before my dear husband kept me supplied with these gum jars, I used empty pill bottles.\u00c2\u00a0 Any firm, small canister will do.<\/p>\n<p>These are my tips for thread nests and broken needle storage.\u00c2\u00a0 And that&#8217;s all I&#8217;m going to say about that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you keep a knife in your sewing room?\u00c2\u00a0 I do and it&#8217;s not for fear of bad guys bursting into my she-cave.\u00c2\u00a0 This is why.
