They are no longer for sale there.\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/32-bish-bubble-29.jpg 200w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/32-bish-bubble-29-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34618\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">These &#8220;Smockables&#8221; are no longer for sale from Martha Pullen Company.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ready-to-smock garments from Martha Pullen Company were my go-to &#8220;bring-along&#8221; project for trips.\u00c2\u00a0 When they were readily available, I laid in a supply.\u00c2\u00a0 But I have run out.\u00c2\u00a0 The white bishop shown above is the last one that will fit any of my grandchildren.\u00c2\u00a0 The few remaining Smockables are for sale <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/category\/store\/ready-to-smock-store\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Starting with a ready-to-smock bishop is the quickest way to get one finished.\u00c2\u00a0 I soon grew tired of the basic style offered and have had fun modifying it.<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks ago, I was packing for our trip to North Carolina.\u00c2\u00a0 We were headed to the mountains with our two younger grandchildren and their parents.\u00c2\u00a0 I knew I had to have some handwork for those few (VERY few) quiet moments after 2 yo tornado Vivian Rose was asleep next to her easy-going brother, Alastair.\u00c2\u00a0 I grabbed this last white bishop and couldn&#8217;t help but think &#8220;ho-hum.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong, I love a geometrically smocked white bishop.\u00c2\u00a0 But I was in\u00c2\u00a0 the mood for something a little different.\u00c2\u00a0 Then, due to the less-than-tidy condition of my sewing room, I spotted this scrap red border given to me by my friend, Suzanne Sawko.\u00c2\u00a0 Hmmmm&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/border-scrap-FI.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34646\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/border-scrap-FI.jpg\" alt=\"border scrap FI\" width=\"1095\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/border-scrap-FI.jpg 1095w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/border-scrap-FI-300x113.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/border-scrap-FI-1024x386.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/border-scrap-FI-800x302.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1095px) 100vw, 1095px\" \/><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve always like this playful little piece.\u00c2\u00a0 I thought if I added it to the hem and smocked with white a little red, the bishop might be more interesting.\u00c2\u00a0 So just hours before our late night departure, I was adding the bias and the border, pulling out floss, needles and buttons for accent. In my haste, I forgot to pack my heavy sweater and nearly froze in that blissfully cool mountain air.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34620\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/1-smocking.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34620\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-34620 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/1-smocking.jpg\" alt=\"rebound neckline and smocking\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/1-smocking.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/1-smocking-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34620\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is the re-bound neckline and smocking. After I thought it was finished, it needed more red. So the tiny buttons were stitched in every other bottom diamond.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The most challenging and time consuming step in the construction of a bishop is binding the neckline.\u00c2\u00a0 Of course, with a ready-to-smock, the binding is finished.\u00c2\u00a0 To add color, I simply cut red gingham bias and covered the existing neckline.\u00c2\u00a0 Easy peasy.<\/p>\n<p>The pleated sleeves were cut just below the top gathering thread and bound with the same red gingham.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/1-dress-side.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34621\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/1-dress-side.jpg\" alt=\"1-dress side\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/1-dress-side.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/1-dress-side-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The gingham band above the border did double duty&#8211;as added interest and as a cover up for the border.<\/p>\n<p>TECHNIQUE:\u00c2\u00a0 A\u00c2\u00a0 3&#8243; gingham strip was folded in half and stacked at the top of the border and the raw edge of the wrong side of the skir&#8217;s hemline. I&#8217;ve just learned how to add text to an image but I can&#8217;t figure out how to correct it.
