Vivian Rose, almost 3yo, on Christmas Day in her CC Betsy<\/p><\/div>\n

I hope December 25th was fabulous for each of you.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I was so overwhelmed with preparations that there wasn’t a spare a moment to say merry Christmas.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0So now I’m sending belated but heartfelt holiday wishes to\u00c2\u00a0you. If you just want to know about the Christmas sewing, scroll on down past all my happy holiday family prattle to interesting features<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Christmas 2015 was almost picture perfect for the Ferguson Family.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0We missed our pilot\u00c2\u00a0son who was called to fly off into the wild blue yonder.<\/p>\n

At a church event, Vivian Rose wore last year’s Swiss flannel smocked bishop<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 The pattern is Betsy\u00c2\u00a0<\/em>by Children’s Corner. <\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"VR<\/a><\/p>\n

Bishops fit for so long.\u00c2\u00a0 That’s just one more reason to love them. Christmas Eve, a huge group of family and friends\u00c2\u00a0enjoyed a delicious dinner of shrimp gumbo and barbequed ribs at the home of our son-in-law’s mother and husband.\u00c2\u00a0 They are excellent cooks!\u00c2\u00a0 We ate\u00c2\u00a0and laughed and had a big time there.<\/p>\n

Grandchildren Vivian and Alastair\u00c2\u00a0played and delighted us all. Christmas Day most of the same group and a few others gathered at the home of our super organized daughter and her computer genius\/gourmet cook husband. Son Ryan had to leave early for the airport after opening gifts and celebrating with his family.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0But the children and their mother joined us across the state after he left.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"A<\/a>

From the moment she unwrapped them, Vivian wore her new shin guards and soccer cleats most of the day, declaring again and again, “I’m ready for soccer!”<\/p><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

Vivian was thrilled with her pink shin guards, pink soccer ball and orange “cleats.”\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0She pranced around showing them off to everyone, saying, “I’m ready for soccer!”\u00c2\u00a0 She wants to do everything her big brother does.<\/p>\n

Big brother helped her put on her gear. He is so attentive and patient with her.<\/p><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

A voracious reader, 10 yo Robert was well into his new book about wolves as we listened to Christmas carols played on the piano.<\/p>\n

\"R<\/a><\/p>\n

Alastair played a solo and then a duet with his grandmother who gives him a weekly piano lesson.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"A<\/a><\/p>\n

With three years of piano instruction, Laurel also played and was then accompanied by Vivian, self-taught.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"L<\/a><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Roast goose and baked ham were on the dinner menu, along with too many sides to list.\u00c2\u00a0 But Vivian couldn’t wait for it to be served.<\/p>\n

She was hungry.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0In her signature\u00c2\u00a0do-it-myself manner, \u00c2\u00a0she\u00c2\u00a0served \u00c2\u00a0herself to\u00c2\u00a0a few samples of ham.\u00c2\u00a0 It was\u00c2\u00a0 delicious.<\/p>\n

All four grandchildren at the kids’ table, waiting for their plates.\u00c2\u00a0 They had already had fun with the crackers at each place setting and were ready to eat.\u00c2\u00a0 The big guy on the left is my dear husband, their\u00c2\u00a0Granddad, who chose to sit with them instead of with\u00c2\u00a0the adults.\u00c2\u00a0Two tiny gingerbread houses made by Alastair and Vivian decorated the table.<\/p><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

Because I got such a late start on Vivian Rose’s dress, it is not Christmas themed.<\/p>\n

The aqua blue silk dupioni bishop, again Betsy<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0 pattern by\u00c2\u00a0Children’s Corner,\u00c2\u00a0can be worn year round.<\/p>\n

With all the activity, I didn’t get a good photo of the\u00c2\u00a0dress, but these show it in action.\u00c2\u00a0 Vivi loved to twirl in it.<\/p>\n

Six year old Alastair had a matching silk bow tie with a tiny circular monogram on the knot.\u00c2\u00a0 I really like the quick and easy free bow tie pattern\/tutorial from Make it and Love It<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After dinner, Granddad walked the children down to the lake.<\/p>\n

What a beautiful Christmas day!<\/p><\/div>\n

Vivian swapped her new soccer duds for her beloved yellow boots.\u00c2\u00a0 Before starting on her Christmas dress, I asked Rebecca for suggestions.\u00c2\u00a0 She said, “Make something that will go with yellow boots.”<\/p>\n

dress features: <\/strong><\/em> lace<\/strong>–the lace is 100% nylon from Luc Smiers\u00c2\u00a0in The Netherlands<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 I am so grateful to Linda S. for tipping me off about this great product.<\/p>\n

It looks almost exactly like cotton lace and is just as soft.\u00c2\u00a0 It has the added benefit of needing little or no ironing.\u00c2\u00a0 My busy daughter rarely gets to ironing, so this is a great feature for Vivi’s clothes.<\/p>\n

There are a few\u00c2\u00a0disadvantages.\u00c2\u00a0 The edging has a bit of a heavy\u00c2\u00a0 thread scallop at the top which makes it impossible to find\u00c2\u00a0a pull thread for gathering.\u00c2\u00a0 I ran a straight stitch at a 3.0 length and that worked just fine.\u00c2\u00a0 But the scallop makes the\u00c2\u00a0header bulky.<\/p>\n

The insertion has a suitable pull thread for shaping but after about a yard, it broke.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0The skirt needed almost 4 yds. of insertion so again I had to\u00c2\u00a0insert a gathering thread.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0For shorter lengths, I think\u00c2\u00a0the built in thread would hold up.<\/p>\n

gimp work<\/strong>–I love pinstitch for securing lace to fabric, but silk dupioni is not a good candidate for that stitch.\u00c2\u00a0 With the heavy header, it needed more than just a satin stitch.\u00c2\u00a0Zig zagging over gimp with 80 wt. thread gives a nice effect, and looks even nicer if you can see .<\/p>\n

\"scalloped<\/a>

This is really substandard. Vision problems have plagued me for the past several months. I’ll sew and see much better after next month’s surgery.<\/p><\/div>\n

fabric<\/strong>–silk dupioni is a joy to work with, once you beat the ravels into submission.\u00c2\u00a0 I wanted to bind the sleeves and neckline with a different fabric and gingham always comes to mind. In my stash I had some silky synthetic aqua gingham seersucker whose color matched pretty closely so that’s what I used.<\/p>\n

The smocking design is a variation on Ellen McCarn’s Buttercream<\/em>.<\/p><\/div>\n

spaghetti bias<\/strong>— with a size 3 dress, there isn’t much room for a wide fancyband.\u00c2\u00a0 The scalloped edging and insertion\u00c2\u00a0 seemed to need more and I wasn’t up to featherstitching between the rows.\u00c2\u00a0 So I made spaghetti bias with the same gingham. These tools made short work of the job.<\/p>\n
