The other letters are from my carelessly unidentified folder called Old Font.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The joy of Christmas lasts all year long, but the time for its decorations and\u00c2\u00a0 trappings is about over.\u00c2\u00a0 So before\u00c2\u00a0December 25 is too far in the past,\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I want to share two more stockings.\u00c2\u00a0 As these were\u00c2\u00a0embroidered\u00c2\u00a0for my friend Zahra,\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0I learned a few more things.\u00c2\u00a0 Keep in mind that at times I&#8217;m a rather slow learner, so these little problem solvers may not be news to you.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0The techniques I discovered while working on Zahra&#8217;s stocking and were included in the post <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2015\/12\/01\/2-aha-moments-and-1-stocking\/\">2 AHA! Moments and 1 Stocking<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Do you learn something new on nearly every sewing project?\u00c2\u00a0 I surely do, though sometimes I wonder\u00c2\u00a0if the new technique hadn&#8217;t been learned before and long since forgotten.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The other three stockings were, as they say, another kettle of fish.\u00c2\u00a0 Actually, they were\u00c2\u00a0two kettles of fish. So let me tell you about them.<\/p>\n<p>Zahra&#8217;s husband Rob and their son Kaden had identical <em>Tampa Bay Buccaneer<\/em> stockings because&#8230;well, why not?\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;re huge fans.\u00c2\u00a0 So their\u00c2\u00a0matching stockings amounted to just one kettle.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 The stocking cuff was embroidered with &#8220;<em>Buccaneers<\/em>&#8221; and Zahra wanted Rob and Kaden&#8217;s names embroidered instead.<\/p>\n<p>I wish I had taken a before picture so you could see that &#8220;Buccaneers&#8221; was heavily embroidered and filled the area now covered with the gray linen oval applique.\u00c2\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t even consider picking out those stitches.<\/p>\n<p>Covering that text with applique&#8217; seemed like a good solution, but\u00c2\u00a0 confining the names inside\u00c2\u00a0the oval frame would have required small letters.\u00c2\u00a0 The\u00c2\u00a0larger capital\u00c2\u00a0&#8220;R&#8221; would have been nestled into the\u00c2\u00a0most narrow part of the oval with the remaining two letters being smaller still.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Kaden&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a05-letter name in an even\u00c2\u00a0smaller font would have been dwarfed by the Buccaneers logo.\u00c2\u00a0 I mean, the name is the most important part of the stocking, right?<\/p>\n<p>The AHA for these stockings came to me when I realized that I COULD break the rules and extend the embroidery beyond the applique&#8217;.\u00c2\u00a0 <em>(I told you I am a slow learner.)\u00c2\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The trick was to make two files, one for the applique&#8217; oval and a second one for the name.\u00c2\u00a0 First the oval was embroidered. Then, using the camera function on my Dream Machine, the &#8220;Rob&#8221; design was simply dragged the\u00c2\u00a0into place on the screen.\u00c2\u00a0 It embroidered right over the oval.<\/p>\n<p>Kaden&#8217;s stocking showed more dramatically\u00c2\u00a0how the letters escaped the oval, but somehow I accidentally deleted those photos.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0A good bit of his name was outside the oval applique&#8217; and nothing bad happened!\u00c2\u00a0 There were no alarms or whistles or Applique&#8217; Police arrests.\u00c2\u00a0 I was a little concerned that there might be a problem where the\u00c2\u00a0lettering overlapped the satin stitching around the oval.\u00c2\u00a0 But my sweet Dream Machine went through it as if it were stitching over batiste.<\/p>\n<p>FYI, I did open the side seam for easier applique&#8217; and embroidery.\u00c2\u00a0 The file splitting technique used on Zahra&#8217;s stocking would not have worked with the applique&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Aliya-all.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-35151\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Aliya-all.jpg\" alt=\"Aliya all\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Aliya-all.jpg 600w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Aliya-all-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Aliya&#8217;s stocking is as girly as the guys&#8217; are macho.<em> (See\u00c2\u00a0pretty little\u00c2\u00a0Aliya in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/03\/the-last-hurrah\/\">The Last Hurrah <\/a>post.)<\/em> \u00c2\u00a0 The hand quilted pink satin is trimmed at the cuff with a velveteen ruffle.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0A sparkly crown pin hangs next to her name.\u00c2\u00a0 The &#8220;A&#8221; is from Sonia Showalter&#8217;s<a href=\"http:\/\/www.soniashowalterdesigns.com\/fairy-tales\/\"> Fairytale Alphabet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The fish in this kettle was the result of my failure to notice\u00c2\u00a0Zahra&#8217;s note in the stocking requesting &#8220;pretty silver lettering.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Alyia-candycane-all1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-35155\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Alyia-candycane-all1.jpg\" alt=\"Alyia candycane all\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Alyia-candycane-all1.jpg 600w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Alyia-candycane-all1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Completely ignoring the rhinestone crown pin, I chose a candy cane font.\u00c2\u00a0This stocking was the first one embroidered, before learning to split the files.\u00c2\u00a0Waaaay too much time was spent resizing the letters to fit the stocking and then working in the cave.
