{"id":37209,"date":"2017-08-30T00:54:50","date_gmt":"2017-08-30T04:54:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/?p=37209"},"modified":"2017-11-03T20:14:49","modified_gmt":"2017-11-04T00:14:49","slug":"antique-featherstitch-extravaganza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/30\/antique-featherstitch-extravaganza\/","title":{"rendered":"Antique Featherstitch Extravaganza"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Needlework is a way to capture Love, Beauty, Peace &amp; Time.&#8221; unknown<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37212\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37212\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-37212\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/petticoat-front-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/petticoat-front-1.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/petticoat-front-1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-37212\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">antique woolen petticoat, heavily embellished with surface embroidery, feather stitching and moth holes<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Antique needlework has always intrigued me.\u00c2\u00a0 So when I spotted this petticoat in an antique shop many years ago, the owner was surprised when I smiled and purchased this moth-eaten slip.\u00c2\u00a0 Her eyes said &#8220;Why would you want that?&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 but her mouth said, &#8220;THANK YOU!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>First, I&#8217;ve always wondered who made this and who wore it?\u00c2\u00a0 Whoever kept warm in this petticoat was either a beloved child or a tiny young lady.\u00c2\u00a0 The satin waist band measures a scant 22,&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 has a lovely hand stitched buttonhole and a pearl button.\u00c2\u00a0 The length is 24&#8243;.\u00c2\u00a0 My first thought was just who would go to all this trouble for a child&#8217;s under garment?\u00c2\u00a0 Then, as a mother and grandmother who has spent countless hours on a single garment for a precious little one,\u00c2\u00a0 I laughed at that absurd thought.\u00c2\u00a0 And I know many of you are laughing, too!\u00c2\u00a0 At any rate, I&#8217;ll never know for whom this was stitched, but it&#8217;s obvious she was well loved.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em><strong>Needlework is a way to capture Love, Beauty, Peace &amp; Time.&#8221; unknown<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Well, clearly there is little to be done with this moth-meal leftover other than study it.\u00c2\u00a0 And it certainly is worthy of careful scrutiny, with the exception of the moth holes.\u00c2\u00a0 Just look at the features.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The hemline design is just spectacular.\u00c2\u00a0 Worked with a heavy silk or rayon cord, the embroidery is heavy and elaborate.\u00c2\u00a0 Can you see where the hemline is faced? The wool is very lightweight, embroidered only through the top layer.\u00c2\u00a0 But the cutwork edge is stitched through both layers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-37214\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/emb-hem.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/emb-hem.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/emb-hem-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The tucks are deep and secured with feather stitching.\u00c2\u00a0 This decorative stitching is applied throughout the garment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-37215\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/tucks.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/tucks.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/tucks-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Three 1&#8243; tucks are held in place with feather stitching, which also covers the seam of the hem to the skirt.<\/p>\n<p>Feather stitches were applied along the center back placket to hold it in place.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37216\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37216\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-37216 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/back-placket.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/back-placket.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/back-placket-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-37216\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Note the fullness of the skirt is drawn up with pleats instead of gathers.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There is only one seam, along the side, which I would have expected to be at the center back.\u00c2\u00a0 The seam allowance been pressed open and secured with even more feather stitches.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-37217\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/side-seam.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/side-seam.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/side-seam-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Moth holes and all, I find this to be a lovely garment.\u00c2\u00a0 I might just try to duplicate the wide. open feather stitch with the My Custom Stitch feature on my Brother Dream Machine. \u00c2\u00a0 It is also on Brother top-of-the-line machines from the original 8500 (not the 8500D), the ULT 2002, 2002D, 2003D, Duetta 4000D, Duetta 4500D, Quattro 6000D\u00c2\u00a0 and\u00c2\u00a0 likely more.\u00c2\u00a0 Other machine brands may also have a design-your-own-stitch feature.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;d love to have that stitch.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s all I know about this petticoat which was made with so much love.\u00c2\u00a0 I have really enjoyed gazing at it through the years and fantasizing about the adoring grandmother with a gray bun and a white apron who made it.\u00c2\u00a0 Of course, she was sitting in a rocker in front of the fireplace drinking a cup of tea, humming hymns, and adding love to each stitch.\u00c2\u00a0 What a pretty picture.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s my story and I&#8217;m stickin&#8217;
