Ignorant as\u00c2\u00a0 about all things Pony,\u00c2\u00a0this Nana\u00c2\u00a0was on a steep learning curve.\u00c2\u00a0 Only when Laurel became enamored of the hairy, rubberized little equines did I realize that I needed to check it out.\u00c2\u00a0 <!--more-->Twenty five years ago, my\u00c2\u00a0Rebecca had one or two and I think that might have been the entire collection.\u00c2\u00a0 But now there are enough ponies to fill\u00c2\u00a0one of those fancy mega-stables in Kentucky.<\/p>\n<p>And then there are the cousin ponies, Pegasus&#8217; with their wings and the unicorns with their horns, each pony with its very own own name, color scheme, embellishment and bio.\u00c2\u00a0 Like Cabbage Patch Kids,\u00c2\u00a0the ponies\u00c2\u00a0have what is almost\u00c2\u00a0a cult following.\u00c2\u00a0 And\u00c2\u00a0not just in the 10 and under age group but even among some adults.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I make no judgements, mind you.\u00c2\u00a0 I just report what I found out on-line.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to construction, the twill \u00c2\u00a0fabric was first embroidered with an applique&#8217; design from Anita Goodesign&#8217;s <em>Baby Ponies<\/em> collection.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 After spending waaaaaay more time than I should have looking at these little critters on line, I selected 8 (the number of girl guests) unicorns and printed out their bios.<\/p>\n<p>You can be sure the little girls checked the\u00c2\u00a0accuracy of the unicorn embroidery with the print out.\u00c2\u00a0 With saccharin names such as Sweetie Belle (Laurel&#8217;s favorite), Brights Brightly and Sunrise Song, \u00c2\u00a0the\u00c2\u00a0unicorn assortment\u00c2\u00a0was intensely scrutinized before each girl made her choice.<\/p>\n<p>The boys&#8217; teepee bags were embroidered with more realistic horses on a khaki twill with a leather cord for a handle.\u00c2\u00a0 But back to the teepee bag itself.<\/p>\n<p>God bless Mary Lou Nall for teaching me how to make a teepee bag in 1984.\u00c2\u00a0 The name is suggested by the shape of the bag.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I can think of no other sewing project that has been more useful to me.<\/p>\n<p>Back in the early days, Martha Pullen&#8217;s first schools were only for shop owners.\u00c2\u00a0 At the first several of these schools, Mary Lou Nall taught a variety of invaluable tips and techniques and the teepee bag was just one.\u00c2\u00a0 I was teaching there as well, but managed to squeeze in Mary Lou&#8217;s class on my\u00c2\u00a0idle day.\u00c2\u00a0 I still have the one we made in class.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Mary Lou\u00c2\u00a0had learned about it in Switzerland from Bernina educators there.\u00c2\u00a0 Since then, I have seen this pattern marketed under several names, none of which is Mary Lou&#8217;s.\u00c2\u00a0 But I digress.<\/p>\n<p>But why is this such a pattern valuable?\u00c2\u00a0 Because you can make it in any size, of any fabric, with any embellishment technique and for almost any purpose.\u00c2\u00a0 And it can be made, sans nice finishing techniques in less than 10 minutes.\u00c2\u00a0 Finish the raw edges by serging and you add another minute or so.<br \/>\nHere is the basic pattern (click on picture to enlarge):<a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/tpbagdir.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-338\" title=\"teepeebagdir\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/tpbagdir-729x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"493\" height=\"772\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; These little teepee bags, whose zippers are approximately 8&#8243; long, were party favors for granddaughter Laurel&#8217;s 5th birthday, a My Little Pony\/Unicorn party.
