This game extended the winning streak to 20. Two of our grandchildren, Laurel and Robert, were here for the festivities, dressed for the occasion.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2009\/11\/15\/gator-girl\/gatorgirlscan\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3954\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3954\" title=\"GatorGirlscan\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/GatorGirlscan-238x300.jpg\" alt=\"GatorGirlscan\" width=\"238\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/GatorGirlscan-238x300.jpg 238w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/GatorGirlscan.jpg 329w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The design on Laurel\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s shirt is one I have used before. If Thanksgiving had not long since been declared a holiday, I would have begun the process of its establishment. It could only have been improved upon, greatly, if our daughter Rebecca, her husband Harvey and Alastair had been here with us.<\/p>\n<p>On a sunny 72 degree Florida fall day, our house was filled with the sounds of\u00c2\u00a0laughing grandchildren, barking dogs and cheering Gator fans. There were tantalizing scents of a crockpot of chili, apple slices (a classic Midwestern variation on apple pie, recipe below), and our family\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s favorite snack mix. The crowd included my brother and his wife, who have been sailing around the world for the past 5 years and are home to stay, our son and his family. It was a day to file away in my memory bank.<\/p>\n<p>But today, I sew. Alone. Quiet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><strong>An hour with your grandchildren can make you feel young again.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Anything longer than that, and you start to age quickly. ~Gene Perret<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I can&#8217;t say that I agree entirely with this statement.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m usually good for several hours.\u00c2\u00a0 But then the inevitable, increased aging process begins.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>APPLE SLICES\u00c2\u00a0~the modern version of an old fashioned recipe . <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>These are very popular for tailgating. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Preheat oven to 425. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>6-8 Granny Smith apples<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>1 1\/2 cup sugar<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>3\/4 teaspoon cinnamon<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>1\/4 cup butter, room\u00c2\u00a0 temperature, not melted<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>2 boxes refrigerated, rolled Pillsbury pie crusts (4 crusts total) <\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>~~~~~~~~~~<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>GLAZE<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>1 1\/2 cups confectioner&#8217;s powdered sugar<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>1 1\/2 teaspoons vanilla extract<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>enough milk to make a drizzle glaze, perhaps 1 tablespoon&#8230;or more<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>Directions:\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>Line\u00c2\u00a0a 9&#215;15&#8243; (or thereabouts) jelly roll pan with two of the pie crusts.\u00c2\u00a0 You have to cut and piece the round crusts to fit the jelly roll pan, but that&#8217;s okay.\u00c2\u00a0 I wet my finger, smooth the\u00c2\u00a0raw edges where they meet and then press with\u00c2\u00a0the tines of a fork to seal the seam.\u00c2\u00a0 Bake for 5 minutes if you don&#8217;t like soggy bottom crusts.\u00c2\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t mind, just leave the crust as is.<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>Peel, core and slice the apples into approximately 1\/4-3\/8&#8243; slices, placing the slices into a large mixing bowl.\u00c2\u00a0 In a 2 cup measuring cup or similarly sized bowl, mix together the sugar and cinnamon. <\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>Pour cinnamon-sugar mix over apple slices and tumble until all slices are well coated with mixture.<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>Pour apple slices into jelly roll pan with pie crust.\u00c2\u00a0 Spread evenly.\u00c2\u00a0 Dot with dollops of butter.\u00c2\u00a0 Place remaining two crusts over apple slices, cutting and pasting as with the bottom crust.\u00c2\u00a0 Slit top crust for steam to escape.\u00c2\u00a0 Wrap aluminum foil strips around the edges and over the top,\u00c2\u00a0covering approximately 1&#8243; from the edge.\u00c2\u00a0 This prevents the edges from browning too quickly. <\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>Bake for about 60 minutes.\u00c2\u00a0 Remove from oven and allow to cool until room temperature. <\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>Mix glaze.\u00c2\u00a0 Drizzle over top.\u00c2\u00a0 Serve plain or with vanilla ice cream.<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Saturday, our family gathered to watch and then celebrate the Florida Gators victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks, 24-14.
