{"id":4757,"date":"2010-02-02T01:08:18","date_gmt":"2010-02-02T06:08:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/?p=4757"},"modified":"2011-11-26T20:04:39","modified_gmt":"2011-11-27T01:04:39","slug":"washable-baby-wipes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2010\/02\/02\/washable-baby-wipes\/","title":{"rendered":"Washable Baby Wipes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>&#8220;It sometimes happens, even in the best of families, that a baby is born.\u00c2\u00a0 This is not necessarily cause for alarm.\u00c2\u00a0 The important thing is to keep your wits about you and borrow some money.&#8221;<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0 Elinor Goulding Smith<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4759\" title=\"wipewarmer\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/wipewarmer-1024x799.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/wipewarmer-1024x799.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/wipewarmer-300x234.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/>Personally, I thought this little project was too insignificant for\u00c2\u00a0my blog.\u00c2\u00a0 But my daughter\u00c2\u00a0declared the topic\u00c2\u00a0both\u00c2\u00a0timely and appropriate and insisted that I write\u00c2\u00a0it up.<\/p>\n<p>While I profess to be an old fashioned Nana,\u00c2\u00a0my daughter is most certainly an old fashioned Mama .\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 She breastfeeds, makes\u00c2\u00a0all of Alastair&#8217;s \u00c2\u00a0baby food and\u00c2\u00a0uses cloth diapers, though, trust me, these high-tech\u00c2\u00a0nappies have little or no resemblance to the ones I used for my babies.<\/p>\n<p>She is also thrifty.\u00c2\u00a0 Very thrifty.\u00c2\u00a0 If she had read this quote, she would have scoffed and reiterated the\u00c2\u00a0importance of \u00c2\u00a0a\u00c2\u00a0realistic budget.<!--more-->Six weeks after Alastair was born, she bought her second jumbo box of disposable baby wipes from Costco.\u00c2\u00a0 When\u00c2\u00a0she started calculating just how much these would cost over the next 2+ years,\u00c2\u00a0 she\u00c2\u00a0 clutched her heart (I&#8217;m certain!), gasped\u00c2\u00a0and called me.\u00c2\u00a0 &#8220;Mama,\u00c2\u00a0will\u00c2\u00a0you please make me some cloth baby wipes?&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0She pointed out that since she is washing diapers every two days, the wipes would generate no significant additional laundry.<\/p>\n<p>Well, it&#8217;s not rocket science.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0So I plucked up a few remnants of soft baby knits from my stash\u00c2\u00a0and rotary cut them into\u00c2\u00a09&#8243; x 7&#8221; rectangles, \u00c2\u00a0sized to fit the electric wipe warmer (another Oh my!).<\/p>\n<p>By rounding the corners, it took very little time to serge the edges on my fabulous Babylock Evolve.\u00c2\u00a0 Rather than use FrayChek or another seam sealant, I took an extra moment to slip the tails into a blunt tapestry needle and thread them through the serged edge.<\/p>\n<p>I had a good sized piece of the pastel knit shown in the wipe warmer.\u00c2\u00a0 Ironically, it is an old fashioned, vintage sort of print, suitable for this old fashioned use.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0I was able to get about 4 dozen wipes from that one print.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Rebecca uses those exclusively for diaper wipes.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/wipes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4758\" title=\"wipes\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/wipes-1024x696.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/wipes-1024x696.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/wipes-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The other print wipes\u00c2\u00a0are used for his bath and for general clean up after he eats.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, cloth diapers are making a comeback, at least among a small segment of young parents.\u00c2\u00a0 Out of concern for the environment and\/or concern for their babies comfort, those mothers \u00c2\u00a0who choose to use cloth have a steep learning curve to climb.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.diaperjunction.com\/bumgenius-one-size-pocket-diaper.html\">http:\/\/www.diaperjunction.com\/bumgenius-one-size-pocket-diaper.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This link is just the first of many found with a google search and the styles are like\u00c2\u00a0most of Alastair&#8217;s diapers.\u00c2\u00a0 Many small, home based businesses sell them as well.<\/p>\n<p>Mothers who use disposable diapers would still find these useful.\u00c2\u00a0 My daughter-in-law still has a few of the baby washcloths \u00c2\u00a0I made 4-5 years ago strategically placed in the kitchen and the family van.<\/p>\n<p>If you have any knit scraps lying around,\u00c2\u00a0make up a few of these washable wipes.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Any baby&#8217;s mother will find a good use for them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;It sometimes happens, even in the best of families, that a baby is born.\u00c2\u00a0 This is not necessarily cause for alarm.\u00c2\u00a0 The important thing is to keep your wits about you and borrow some money.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 Elinor Goulding Smith Personally, I &hellip;
