She\u00c2\u00a0explained that\u00c2\u00a0she knew I wanted her to have it, and of course, she was right.<\/p>\n<p>Later, it was displayed in her sorority house room, then in her first apartment and\u00c2\u00a0next in\u00c2\u00a0the\u00c2\u00a0first home she bought as a career girl.\u00c2\u00a0 Only now, as &#8220;Sadie, Sadie, Married Lady&#8221; (remember Barbra Streisand singing this in <em>Funny Girl<\/em>?),\u00c2\u00a0having moved into Harvey&#8217;s house, \u00c2\u00a0has Rebecca relegated this little\u00c2\u00a0quilt to her cedar chest for lack of a properly barren wall.<\/p>\n<p>I love to quilt.\u00c2\u00a0 When watercolor quilting hit the piecemakers&#8217; world,\u00c2\u00a0 I was singing, &#8220;Getting to Know You,&#8221; (<em>The King and I<\/em>) eager to learn all about.\u00c2\u00a0 My dear friend Suzanne and I signed up for a workshop in North Carolina and waited in eager anticipation.\u00c2\u00a0 Well, actually, Suzanne waited.\u00c2\u00a0 I cut 2&#8243; squares.\u00c2\u00a0 Thousands of them.\u00c2\u00a0 When we finally headed north, I had cutter&#8217;s cramp.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In their inspiring book,<em> Watercolor Quilts<\/em>, Pat\u00c2\u00a0Magaret and Donna Slusser suggested the use of large pizza boxes in which to stack 2&#8243; squares.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00c2\u00a0hurried on\u00c2\u00a0down to Pizza Hut and purchased 10 clean, new boxes.\u00c2\u00a0 Because a single piece of fabric can render a countless number of watercolor possibilities, I cut 20 squares from each of about 200 fabrics in order to assuage my fear of being caught short, lacking\u00c2\u00a0the perfect blendable square. I would be prepared.<\/p>\n<p>I am\u00c2\u00a0a woman of excess and I admit it. I talk too much, eat too much, drive too fast and buy too much lace and fabric. Perhaps it is my fear of not having just the right\u00c2\u00a0piece for just the right place or project that\u00c2\u00a0is has caused the transformation of our 3-car garage into a no-room-for-cars garage, stuffed as it is with\u00c2\u00a0plastic bins\u00c2\u00a0of fabric.\u00c2\u00a0 I should stand up and announce to the world, &#8220;Hello, my name is Janice and I am a fabricholic.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 But it will take more than 12 steps to cure me.<\/p>\n<p>Suzanne, however, is a woman of moderation.\u00c2\u00a0 She eats salads, travels light, chooses her words carefully, drives\u00c2\u00a0precisely at the speed limit and buys just enough fabric for her next project with\u00c2\u00a0a little extra,\u00c2\u00a0just in case.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0She rolled her eyes as we packed clothes, sewing machines, sewing\u00c2\u00a0supplies and 10 large pizza boxes that<strong> must<\/strong> be stacked level, thank you very much, into her barely adequate Buick sedan. I knew\u00c2\u00a0we should have brought my mini van.<\/p>\n<p>Today, those pizza boxes, minus 169 squares,\u00c2\u00a0are neatly stacked in my overflowing sewing room, serving now\u00c2\u00a0as a tribute to this quilt,\u00c2\u00a0 my single\u00c2\u00a0venture into the world of watercolor quilting.\u00c2\u00a0 Hope springs eternal that it will not be\u00c2\u00a0my last.\u00c2\u00a0 Frankly, I would like to\u00c2\u00a0have a watercolor quilt of my own.<\/p>\n<p>This quilt was so much fun to make.\u00c2\u00a0 I enjoyed working with a flannel design wall, and plundering through my ten boxes of fabric squares.\u00c2\u00a0 I enjoyed, for the first time, using a different\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0fabric for the binding on each side.
